Top Ten Tuesday Ten Books We Picked Up On A Whim

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s Top Ten Books We Picked Up On A Whim (however you decide to interpret that (bought or read or something else) — I know most people read based on recommendation but we want to know those books you picked up without really hearing about or knowing much about!)

1 The List

by Siobhan Vivian

I only requested this from Netgalley because I got an email about this books specifically. I’d already seen it on the website and thought it’s blurb a bit vague and not exactly my thing so I moved on. The day I got the email, I was a little click happy with requesting and I thought that obviously, because I kept coming across it, requesting it must be a good idea. Of course, I was right and I loved the book! IT turned out not to be what I thought it was going to be at all. Written a tiny bit like Cloud Atlas, it follows 8 girls around their high school. The 4 voted pretty and the 4 voted ugly. Things don’t exactly go the way you’d think.

You can read my review HERE.

2 The Circle Trilogy

By Nora Roberts

Perhaps less of a whim, but I only read these because my mother got them out of our local library along with her Garden trilogy. It wasn’t until she brought them home that she realised that they were about vampires and perhaps unwilling to take them back ‘unread’ offered them to me. I’d seen Nora’s books around but I wasn’t particularly interested. The word ‘vampire’ attracted me as I’ve always been a fan, but I wasn’t enthusiastic. I don’t remember what caused me to actually try them – perhaps the short time scale in which they were to be ours –  the last time I read them was over 6 years ago after all! Now, I own half a double stacked shelf full of her trilogies and quartets (far better than the stand alones)! I’m so happy that I did read them. Her books are more of an adult romance, but they always have fantastically engrossing storylines. This one is about witches and vampires and time travel and saving the world.

3 Fangirl

by Rainbow Rowell

No idea why I’ve picked this up, but it’s mine now and hopefully I’ll read it and it wont get resigned to the never-read graveyard! I probably bought it because it’s about a fan girl and I’ve seen it all over. Not really sure it’s my type of book, but we’ll give it a go and see! Sometime…maybe over the summer.

4 Illuminae

by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Another book I’ve seen around a lot, though this one seems to be more up my street. I’m semi trying to branch out and thought this would be one on the edge of my comfort zone. From what I can tell, it seems to have an interesting story telling style too. I don’t want to investigate too far though, because I don’t want to come across any spoilers!

5 The Diviners

by Libba Bray

Yeeeaahhh, got nothin’.
No idea why I have this.

6 The Sin Eater’s Daughter

by Melinda Salisbury

This popped up on my Amazon recommendations back at the end of 2014. It had such a gorgeous cover but there was no blurb available and there were no reviews on Goodreads. I pre-ordered it anyway and I started it as soon as it arrived. I had no expectations, I just read and I loved every minute of it!

Wild Swans

by Jessica Spotswood

I requested this because I recognised the authors name but I hadn’t read any of her other books and I’ll admit I never even read the blurb. I thought this book was great. I really connected with the main character and I loved that the story was so believable.

8 A Reaper of Stone

by Mark Gelineau and Joe King

I saw this on Netgalley one day and thought it sounded pretty good. On a whim, I requested it and man, am I glad I did! I’ve read all of this complex miniseries so far and its now one of my favourite series’.

9 Queen of Blood

by Jill Myles

Another Netgalley request. I requested this because of the cover again and was surprised by how much I liked this. It’s a sort of Beauty and the Beast/ Cinderella remake. Its very old school but I loved it!

10 Nightfall

by Jake Halpern and peter Kujawinski

I requested a copy of this last week because it has a wonderfully spooky cover and it sounds interesting. I haven’t looked at the reviews so I don’t really know what to expect but fingers crossed I’ll be able to add this to the list of whim pick-ups that pays off!
