Musing Monday

pammusing
It’s time for Musing Mondays, a meme from Books and a Beat!

(Please note it has moved from A Daily Rhythm)

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme that asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer and then supplies a random question:

  • I’m currently reading…
  • Up next I think I’ll read…
  • I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
  • I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I can’t wait to get a copy of…
  • I wish I could read ___, but…
  • I blogged about ____ this past week…
Up next I think I’ll read
Chaos Rises

Chaos Rises by Pippa DeCosta is on my list next. This is an ARC that I received recently. I always love the covers for Pippa DaCosta’s books, there’s always something gritty and supernatural about them and the colours are always vibrant. I’ve read a couple of her books previously, City of Fae for example, which I didn’t really like but thought had some clever ideas, and Girl from Above which I loved! Here’s hoping Chaos Rises is more like Girl from Above.

‘When the veil fell, any half bloods not strong enough to withstand Chaos were torn apart. Some, like me and my brother, survived The Fall. Most did not.

That’s the good news. The bad news saw a whole other world try and devour ours. Demons, we call them. They came in countless waves. Destroying. Killing. Many people thought it was the end…

The Fall lasted a week.

Tens of thousands died.

Hell almost claimed our world as its own.

And then, from one day to the next, it was over. The veil came back, stronger than ever. I’m not sure if anyone knows how it was put right. But I do know it’s been six months since The Fall, me and my brother are on the run, and the leftover demons aren’t the most dangerous things in LA.
We are.’

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Name a book that was turned into a movie, and completely desecrated (in your opinion).

Hmm, I have a few of these…

Golden Compass Gulliver's Travels Hitchhiker's Guide Twilight

For me all of the above movies lacked the magic of the books that preceeded them.

For some it was just the terrible casting… I love Jack Black but who thought he would make a good Gulliver? Seriously? And Zooey Deschanel is amazing but as Trillion? no, please just no!

I hated the chopping and changing of the storylines in all of these, they cherry picked bits and through large chunks away and in some cases, made huge chunks up… These are all complex stories and deserved more thought and time. I can’t watch Twilight anymore, it makes me cringe at how false and forced it feels. It may appear similar to the book but it lacked all the necessary elements to make it magical.

How about you? What films totally missed the mark for you?

I haven’t read the books you mention that were turned into movies…and disappointed you. I couldn’t think of any offhand, but I try not to have expectations about movies based on books. The ones I loved that were based on books were Gone Girl and ROOM.

    Here’s my MUSING MONDAYS POST

Hi Laurel Rain, I could only come up with these because I’d actually had a discussion with a friend on this very subject just last week! I haven’t seen or read Gone Girl orroom but I mean too. Which would you recommend, reading or watching them first?

Casting choices can make or break a movie.

I find it interesting to HHGtG on the list. One thing I enjoy about Douglas Adams and the multiple versions of HHGtG is that they all start from the same point but spin-off in very different directions. And since Adams wrote a draft of the script before his death, I assume that some of the direction the movie took was his influence.

      Hi Michael,

Exactly! Sometimes they just force famous actors into roles in a vain attempt to gain more publicity.

I don’t really know what it was about this particular version of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy but I struggled to find it entertaining or captivating, perhaps it was the acting? I need to re-read the series, it’s been a while.

      Thanks for stopping by,
      Happy Reading
