I was going to go with fantasy lands, but felt that might be a cheat…

1 Harry Potter by J.K Rowling

- Various locations across the UK.

uk

A magical fantasy for all ages (aimed at children).
This is probably going to be on a lot of lists today, but it’s one that can’t be skipped as it’s changed so many lives. I’m so pleased that the rest of the magical world is coming out on Pottermore. It must be a fantastic feeling, to suddenly realise you don’t need to be sad you live in the wrong country, because your country has a magic school of it’s own.
I hope JK keeps going with these schools, until the world is covered because everyone deserves to belong somewhere.

2 The Martian by Andy Wier

So some of it’s in the US, but mostly it’s on MARS!

mars

Sci-Fi.
I loved this book more than I thought I would. It made me both laugh and cry and I was throughly impressed because I’d have thought it was not my kind of book. If you’ve seen the film and have any kind of issue with ‘plot holes’ then read the book. Pretty sure everything’s covered there – Though Matt Damon did a fantastic job.

3 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Sweden (And various other locations around the world but mainly Sweden)

sweden

Mystery.
I found this series required concentration, but I also couldn’t leave them alone. It was also quite facinating to read about a society so similar, yet different to my own. I’ve been to Finland next door but never Sweden so when I read it, I imagined a place a lot like Finland.

4 Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

Ireland.

ireland

Fantasy for all ages. (Aimed at children)
I hope the summer is long enough to fit in all the re-reading series completion I hope to fit into it! This is one of the series I hope to finish this summer and I can’t wait. They’re so clever and witty I can’t wait to get back to them.

5 Beauty and the Clockwork Beast

Various locations across the UK.

uk

Steampunk/Retelling.
Literally just finished this one. It’s not out yet, but my review will be up next week and it should be out the week after. It’s fantastic and I hope to get a pretty little hardback sometime. It’s called Jane Eyre meets Beauty and the Beast and I loved it!

This is an awesome topic. I’d love to read more books based in Europe and Asia so any recommendations would be great. Thanks!

6 And I Darken by Kiersten White

- The Ottoman Territory (1400 – 1500) – Includes Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova etc
5 Voodoos

ottoman_empire_1870

A Young Adult Historical Fiction.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I have a sneaky suspicion it will be my favourite book of 2016.
There is a distinct sense of place throughout with wonderfully detailed descriptions of the surroundings as well as smells and outfits.

7 The Boys of Summer – C J Duggan

- Onslow Australia
- 5 Voodoos

Onslow Australia

A Young Adult – (almost New Adult) – Contemporary Romance
Such a cute summer romance. I still have the rest of the series to read and can’t wait to get stuck back into this series and see what antics the Onslow Boys get up to next. All the way through it describes the beaches and the lifestyle of living on the sea front. It’s so much fun and so summery.

8  The Incarnations by Susan Barker

- Bejing China
4 Voodoos

Bejing China
An Adult Historical Fiction
This was a fascinating book that explored reincarnation and how destructive it could be.
Susan Barker does a great job at expressing all the details of each historical event and how Chinese Culture changed with each one. Really complex and a little scary!

9 The Little Shop of Happily Ever After by Jenny Colgan

- The Scottish Highlands
- 5 Voodoos

highlands
An Adult Fiction (Romance)
Jenny Colgan has a witty and easy writing style which means I devoured this in a couple of days.
The MC leaves her life in Birmingham to run a traveling Book Store in the Highlands of Scotland. Jenny paints the most beautiful and serene images of Scotland, even in the rain!

10 End of the World Running Club by Adrian Walker

- The UK
3.5 Voodoos

uk

An Adult Science Fiction
Edgar in The End of the World Running Club ends up running from just outside Glasgow, down the M6 and past Bristol all the way down to Cornwall in a desperate attempt to be reunited with his family and get evacuted from the UK. It’s an impressive journey and a lot of this book is dedicated to the monotony of running but every now and then we get descriptions of the decimated UK surroundings. Its long and tedious in places but for the most part its full of suspense and scary situations.
