It’s time for Musing Mondays, a meme from Books and a Beat!

Glass Sword

If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Red Queen but I did enjoy moments so I’m willing to give this series another go. Not sure what to expect but I’ve avoided reviews etc in the hope that I won’t get my expectations too high (like last time). I’m hoping that’s the reason it was such a disappointment last time. Have you read Red Queen? What did you think?

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Name a favorite book you’d take to the beach.

I love a contemporary romance when it comes to beach reading. They’re easy, don’t require a lot of concentration and always make me smile. But they have to be sunny beach set contemporary romances. I find it difficult to read books about snow while I’m baking myself. One of my favourites would be C J Duggan’s Boys of Summer. It’s cute, it’s funny and it’s sexy. I still need to read the rest of the series though.

What book would you take with you?

boys of summer

Quiet seventeen-year-old Tess doesn’t relish the thought of a summertime job. She wants nothing more than to forget the past haunts of high school and have fun with her best friends before the dreaded Year Twelve begins.

To Tess, summer is when everything happens: riding bikes down to the lake, watching the fireworks at the Onslow Show and water bomb fights at the sweltering Sunday markets.

How did she let her friends talk her into working?

After first-shift disasters, rude, wealthy tourists and a taunting ex-boyfriend, Tess is convinced nothing good can come of working her summer away. However, Tess finds unlikely allies in a group of locals dubbed ‘The Onslow Boys’, who are old enough to drive cars, drink beer and not worry about curfews. Tess’s summer of working expands her world with a series of first times with new friends, forbidden love and heartbreaking chaos.

All with the one boy she has never been able to forget.

It will be a summer she will always remember.
