Top Ten Tuesday: All About The Villains

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s All About The Villains and we’ve chosen Top Ten Noteworthy Villains.

harry potter bloodlines city of bones special narnia secret vampire

1 Umbridge from Harry Potter

By JK Rowling

No list about villains is complete without mentioning Umbridge. Especially as I’ve just recently read the Novella that had a section on her. Boy was she a nasty piece of work. Everyone tends to agree that while Voldemort was the Big Bad, she’s the one everyone wanted to die.

2 The Alchemists from Bloodlines

by Richelle Mead

They probably started off as a decent sort of cult type group, but they have some pretty horrific practices when we meet them. Some of which I believe might just be going on in so called conversion camps to ‘make gay people straight’ as though they weren’t made like that for a reason. Sydney ends up in one of their facilities and we get to see what goes on through her and it’s abominable.

3 Valentine from Mortal Instruments

by Cassandra Clare

97% sure that worse is coming, but he started it all by being awful and experimenting like he did and lying like he did and keeping that captive in his cellar. All while believing he was justified. I wonder, if his past self had been shown his future self, would he have been horrified?

4 Shift the ape from Narnia

by C S Lewis

I also considered The White Witch as she’s pretty nasty in The Magicians Nephew, but I’ve gone for Shift because while the witch believed she should rule she helped bring about the Narnia we love, where as the ape was simply greedy and his actions effected the end.

5 The “NightWorld” The Nightworld Series

by LJ Smith

I can’t think of a better way to describe who I mean so I’ll elaborate. In these books The Nightworld is made up of witches and werewolves and vampires (both kinds) and shapeshifters, but many of them look down on the humans, there’s a secret faction within the secret faction that believes in living peacefully with the humans (once more) but it’s not a commonly held view. About half way through the series they really start to battle the end of the world, many Nightworlders are all for it because they assume it means they’ll get to rule, then the dragons start awakening…Man I remember being so freaked out by the dragon the first time I read book 9, it was quite terrifying, possibly because it was so terrifying to the characters.

red queen The Stars Never Rise A Darker Shade final for Irene Narnia every ugly word

6 Maven from Red Queen

by Victoria Aveyard

Sorry if this spoils Red Queen for anyone but Maven had to make my list of Villains. For me anyone who is that deceptive and deceitful can be nothing other than the worst kind of Villian! He was manipulative, cold and calculating and it took me completely by surprise. He broke my heart just as he broke Mare’s.

7 The Church from The Stars Never Rise

by Rachel Vincent

Again another example of a hidden Villain. The Church in The Stars Never Rise pretends to protect everyone but really they are the bad-guys, they are evil and twisted and everything they say is a lie!

8 Astrid and Athos Dane from A Darker Shade of Magic

by V E Schwab

What I love about Astrid and Athos is the fact that they are straight up bad-guys. They don’t lie, they don’t pretend, they just murder and torture and enjoy every minute of being evil. I understand them, even if they are completely horrible!

9 The White Witch from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

by C S Lewis

The White Witch was one of my favourite Villain’s when I was growing up. I loved how she portrayed herself as the victim to Edmund and convinced him that she was the true Queen, but like all Villain’s she couldn’t keep the facade up and just like the ice, she started to crack and show her true colours.

10 Ashley’s Mom from Every Ugly Word

by Aimee Salter

Ashley’s Mom in Every Ugly Word makes my list because I believe a mom should always do the best for their child and if their child comes to them and tries to tell them horrendous things, such as what Ashley went through, then they should listen and care and do everything they can to make their child safe and happy, not blame them because they don’t want to understand. Ashley’s Mom is a Villain through and through because she cared more about herself and how it would look on her than she did about Ashley and that is unthinkable.

Umbridge and the White Witch made my list this week too!
Totally agree with you about Valentine (can;t believe I forgot him on my list!). I think the scary thing about villains is that they see their actions as totally justified and don;t see how what they are doing is bad.
I’ve seen Astrid and Athos on quite a few lists already today, I’ve just bought A Darker Shade of Magic so very excited to start reading. Will prepare myself for their evilness!
I totally agree with you about Maven, totally broke my heart too. It’s always worse when you don;t see it coming!
    Great list!

Oh I hope you love A Darker Shade of Magic. It was one of my favourite books of last year! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t see it coming with Maven. I felt so betrayed! Thanks for stopping by!
