Welcome back to Mount Polbearne! The new book from Top Ten bestseller Jenny Colgan is full of festive joy, warmth and the best hot chocolate you can imagine…

It’s Christmas in the Cornish coastal village of Mount Polbearne – a time for family, friends and feasting.

Polly Waterford loves running the Little Beach Street Bakery. She’s at her happiest when she’s creating delicious treats and the festive season always inspires her to bake and knead something extra special for the village residents. In fact, the only thing she loves more than her bakery is curling up with her gorgeous boyfriend, Huckle. She’s determined that this Christmas is going to be their best one yet, but life doesn’t always work out as planned…

When Polly’s best friend Kerensa turns up with a secret that threatens the life Polly and Huckle have built together, the future begins to look uncertain. And then a face from Polly’s past reappears and things become even more complicated. Polly can usually find solace in baking but she has a feeling that’s not going to be enough this time. Can she get things back on track so that everyone has a merry Christmas?

It’s been a while since I wrote a review. As some of you may know, I’ve been in a pretty terrible reading slump recently. I’m sure everyone knows that life sometimes throws too much at you all in one go and somethings, like reading, fall off the table. Anyway, I found a few hours of quiet recently and finally picked up my kindle for the first time in over a month. I wanted something not to heavy, something cheerful and preferably something with a festive twist. And that’s exactly what I got when I picked up Jenny Colgan’s latest novel. Apparently this is the third book in her series, Little Beach Street Bakery. Something I didn’t know when I started reading this, but in all honesty, I don’t think you need to have read Little Beach Street Bakery or Summer at Little Beach Street Bakery, because I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I haven’t read either of the previous two.

Christmas at the Little Beach Street Bakery has all the usual Jenny Colgan magic, with it’s instantly loveable characters, a heart-warming story-line and hilarious moments of drama. There’s something special about the way Jenny Colgan writes that makes you feel as though she is corresponding directly with you and as though you have been friends for years and years. Every joke feels like an inside joke that you’re a part of and every hiccup in the storyline feels like a jolt to your heart because, you know these characters and, you only want the very best for them.

I loved getting to know Polly Waterford and her quirky life as a baker on a small island just off of Cornwall. She had the most fascinating life. I can’t imagine living in a lifehouse or adopting a rather independant Puffin and naming him Neil. In some ways, when you think about all the things that make up Polly’s life, you wonder how she could ever complain about anything. It’s so unique, so packed full of exotic things, that you kind of feel you should be jealous of her but somehow Jenny Colgan makes Polly seem like a regular person, just like you or me and I couldn’t help falling in love with her and her strange mix of friends.

Christmas at the Little Beach Street Bakery is easy to read, full of warmth and humour and I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a wonderful romance story that’s perfect for the Christmas season. I will definitely be checking out Polly’s adventures on Mount Polbearne!

PS There are some wonderful recipes at the end of this book that will definitely inspire the budding baker in you!
