Top Ten: Favorite Movies and/or TV Shows

pamstopten

Another weekly link up top ten by http://www.brokeandbookish.com.

This week it’s top ten movies or TV shows. I couldn’t decide so I did 5 of each.

I added quotes too because I love quotes! I would have loved to have had the time to track down my favourites, But short of watching the entire list again, there’s just too many to sort through and so little time!

FILMS

5. Beastly

Beastly (2011)

A Beauty and the Beast rewrite, based off of the book Beastly by Alex Flinn, this has been the ONLY occasion I have discovered that I liked the film MORE than the book, despite having read the book first, so far at least. There were certainly some weak points in the film, but the end was just beautiful. And the added extra scene at the end, that wasn’t in the book…but I don’t care, I loved what it signified.
“Can you imagine that kind of love?”

4. Predators

From romantic to action! I saw this, then went back and watched the old ones. This is certainly superior in my opinion. Again, I liked the end. I hope they make a sequel: Several highly skilled individuals are dropped onto an alien planet and hunted down by aliens. Except it doesn’t quite go down how the aliens planned….
“ I didn’t think you’d come back. But she, she never lost faith in you. I guess I owe you an apology. You are a good man after all.[moves to stab him in the back]”

“[stops him] No. I’m not. But I’m fast.”

3. The Crow (1-4)

               The-Crow-movie-poster-1994-picture-MOV_397917ed_b the-crow-salvation-movie-poster-2000-1010475548 the-crow-salvation-movie-poster-2000-1020211089 images (1)

Ok, so this isn’t one it’s four. But despite what people believe, they aren’t remakes or anything, they carry the idea from the first film through. Another misconception is that these are horror films. Ok, so there’s some killing going on and stuff, but these films have to fall under romance somewhere. The basic premise of the films is that someone witnesses someone they love die in a terrible manner before being killed themselves and their soul cant rest, so a Crow brings their soul back to put the wrong things right.
That these people loved so much that their souls couldn’t rest till it was set right is something deeply appealing.
“How could God pick such a man?”
“Why not? She did.”

2. The Prince Of Persia

                                             Prince-of-Persia-The-Sands-of-Time-Movie prince-of-persia-courage-movie-poster

Time travel. LOVE time travel. I also love Dastan and Tamina. A prince, accused of his fathers murder at a celebration in an invaded city must go on the run with the local princess. They don’t see eye to eye at first, but eventually the Princess realises their Destiny is the same..
Also, who doesn’t just like looking at Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton?!?!
“You know you really walk like one. Head held high, chest out, long stomping strides. The walk of a self-satisfied Persian prince. No doubt it comes from being told since birth the world is yours, and actually believing it.”
“I wasn’t born in a palace like you! I was born in the slums of Nasaf, where I lived if I fought and I clawed for it.”
“Then how did you become a prince?”
“ The king… marched into the market one day, and he… I don’t know, he… he found me. He took me in, he gave me a family, he gave me a home. What you…are looking…at, is… the walk of a man, who just lost everything.”

1. Practical Magic

This is my ultimate favourite. I couldn’t exactly tell you why. But the reason I know it’s my favourite is because one weekend, I had a migraine and I sat and watched this film two or three times in a row in the dark wrapped up in a duvet. I tried reading the book but it was terrible (sorry). I love the family, the house, the dynamics. Two sisters move in with their witchy aunts and get up to all sorts of mischief. Gilly runs off, forever in love and Sally settles down with her husband and kids. But Sally’s husband dies and she moved back home, heartbroken, she’s set to die like her mother, but Gilly needs her sister.
“Did you or your sister kill James Angelov?”
“Oh,yeah, couple a times.”

“All I want is a normal life.”
“ My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage!”
“ Well, it’s what I want.”

TV series

5. Bones

bones

Where do you even start with Bones?! I can’t remember the beginning. We’re at season 9 now. Or is it ten? An FBI agent and a Forensic Anthropologist team up to solve crimes. Except her entire lab gets involved too. He’s charismatic and protective and she’s socially awkward and brilliant, as are a lot of the members of her lab. Then there’s the interoffice romances all over the place…
“Anthropology teaches us that the alpha male is the man wearing the crown, displaying the most colourful plumage, and shiniest bobbles. He stands out from the others. But I now think that anthropology may have it wrong. And working with Booth, I’ve come to realize, that the quiet man, the invisible man, the man who is always there, for friends and family…that’s the real alpha male. And I promise that my eyes will never be caught by those shiny bobbles again.”.

4. Supernatural

Supernatural-supernatural-30545991-1680-1050

Dean and Sam have an interesting family business; Demon hunting. It started the night their mother died in a firey ball, pinned to the ceiling of Sams nursery. Or did it?! Their dad is missing and Dean pulls Sam out of College to help him find him. I don’t think any brothers anywhere have as many up and downs as these guys do. They are full of far more angst than your average American teen (an that’s a lot, so my modern media tells me). It’s pretty amusing most of the time, but if you’re watching these series back to back, you might start to flag around season 6. Maybe after the first 3 take a rest. It falls into a pattern and can be very samey. They do shake it up a bit though. They throw in angels here and there. And Cas is certainly worth his weight in entertainment gold.
“ I found a liquor store.”
“ And?”
“ And, I drank it.”

3. Firefly

Firefly

FIREFLY! Ok, this is third because, as sad as the truth is, it’s finished. I don’t have any excitement about waiting for the next series etc. But I still love this. I mean, space pirates! It’s an amazing look into a future where we haven’t managed to kill ourselves off. Which is pretty amazing at the rate we’re going. The characters were all amazing, it was such a shame it got cancelled but SO happy that they got to make a film to finish off the big questions. That goes under this heading too, because then I get an extra favourite, Serenity. Such a good film. I love how River grows into herself and more than half her mysteries are answered.
“Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction.”
“We live in a spaceship, dear.” -Firefly

“This landing is gonna get pretty interesting.”
“ Define “interesting”.”
“ [deadpan] Oh God, oh God, we’re all going to die?” – Serenity

2. Once Upon A Time/Once Upon A Time in wonderland

          Once-Upon-a-Time-Poster 3764813159

I love fairy tales. I love rewrites. I love these series! (The writers are pretty damned mean to Regina though, I have to admit.) I love how interwoven all the characters we know and love are. Mostly, I love their account of Snow White and it’s definitely put it in my top 5 Fairy Tales, it was never a contender before, the Disney film is older than my parents and not overly exciting, truth be told. A bail bonds-woman, Emma, is shocked out of her lonely world when a boy turns up on her doorstep claiming to be the baby she gave up years ago. This isn’t his only surprise for her however, he takes her back to his home town where every story character you’ve ever known is trapped under a curse, forcing them to forget who they are and to live mundane lives away from those they love. The biggest surprise for her however, is finally finding the parents who gave her up so long ago; Prince Charming and Snow White.
And Then there’s Wonderland. This has given me a whole new appreciation for Alice too, again the Disney cartoon was never one I connected with.I did like Tim Burton’s version though. Alice, determined to prove to her father that wonderland was real, kept returning until she met and fell in love with a Genie, Cyrus. They travelled the world together, running from an evil man after the lamp the Genie was connected to. But eventually he catches up with them and throws the Genie off a cliff. Convinced he’s dead Alice returns to London and resigns herself to a life in a mental ward. but the Knave of hearts owes Alice and he breaks her out, returning her to Wonderland with new hope; Cyrus is alive.

“I fell in love with you on a troll bridge after you robbed me and hit me over the head with a rock. I knew what I was getting myself into.” – Once Upon A Time (who’s hidden all the good quotes?!)

“It’s a place called Mimsie Meadows under the towering Tom Tom tree. It’s a place where nobody goes.”
“With a name like that why would they, unless they were a Care Bear?” Once Upon A Time In Wonderland

1. Doctor Who

tv-doctor-who-utah-glow-poster-PYR32642

I love time travel, so this HAD to be number one, right? But actually it’s also the ideas! They’re spectacular. And Matt Smith, he’s my Doctor. The delivery of so many of those amazing lines makes me happy to have rewind options. Sometimes you need to hear those speeches a few times over. A wise old man who can change his face when he dies travels around space and time with various companions, saving everyone have can. And yet, that doesn’t even skim the surface.

“ But I don’t understand. Are you the new caretaker?”
“ I’m usually called the Doctor. Or the caretaker. Or “Get off this planet.” Though strictly speaking that probably isn’t a name”

“Oo! Now what’s this, then? I love this. Big flashy lighty thing. That’s what brought me here. Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. Give me time. And a crayon.”

“ No you’re not! You’re a bitey mad lady. The TARDIS is up-and-downy stuff in a big blue box.”
“ Yes, that’s me. A type 40 TARDIS. I was already a museum piece when you were young. And the first time you touched my console, you said—”
“ I said you were the most beautiful thing I’d ever known.”
“ Then you stole me. And I stole you.”
“ I borrowed you.”
“ Borrowing implies the eventual intention to return the thing that was taken. What makes you think I would ever give you back?”

Hello Alison! Thank you for visiting us! I’ve just realised both my quotes were from Wash. Now I’m sad too.
