Musing Monday

pammusing
It’s time for Musing Mondays, a meme from The Purple Booker!

Please note that Musing Monday has moved from Books and a Beat.

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme that asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer and then supplies a random question:

  • I’m currently reading…
  • Up next I think I’ll read…
  • I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
  • I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I can’t wait to get a copy of…
  • I wish I could read ___, but…
  • I blogged about ____ this past week…
I wish I could read City of Fallen Angels, but…

It’s not a red book and February is red books. I also have a growing collection of review books I REALLY need to clear. I keep receiving lovely emails full of nice books! Need to fit these in somewhere….

We’re going to be a week behind each musing monday as we sadly can’t post on the day anymore but we’re loving the random questions and we will try and get round everyone’s posts when we can!

LAST WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you try out genres you have not liked in the past once in a while just to see if your taste changed?

I do go back to genres I haven’t liked previously but not to see if my tastes have changed. I don’t think I ever decide to ‘see if my tastes have changed’. I have a very specific kind of book I like to read most of the time, but sometimes a character or a premise will tempt me out of my comfort zone, because really it’s the characters I read books for most. If they aren’t interesting I’m not interested.
I’d like to think of myself as a book by book person rather than a book by genre person. Of course that’s quite unrealistic considering the sheer volume of books in the world! So I tend to book by book within the areas I know I’ll like, but every now and then I’ll read something totally different.
What I mean by book by book is that instead of saying “That’s a romance book. I don’t like those.” I’d totally judge it by its cover then perhaps read the book blurb. If it sounds like a story I may enjoy then I’d consider reading it even if it wasn’t in my usual genres.

Generally I don’t like to read about contemporary stories. I really don’t like, I think it’s called “Modern Lit”? where grown women end up in stupid situations and totally embarrass themselves. Second hand embarrassment is not my idea of fun, but having said that, I have read and enjoyed some in the past.
