Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Things On Our Reading Wishlist

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s Top Ten Things On Our Reading Wishlist. We thought this was quite similar to the post 2 weeks ago so we’ve chosen books from our wishlist and explained why they’re there.

1 Back Story

Death and Night by Roshani Chokshi

This is a tricky one. Some times back stories can be really boring and unnecessary – especially when put into the wrong part of the book. Other times your story just needs that extra little bit of information or their origin won’t leave you alone until you put it into a novella.
I really want to read the story of the first time Maya and Amar first met! Except it seems to be unavailable everywhere despite it’s release date being 2nd May! I’m annoyed! (do you know where I can get it from?)
Another example of good back story was for the Throne of Glass series. They first novellas came out before the first book and it was recommended by the author/publisher that you read them first. Which I did. However I preferred the Celaena of the novellas far more than her from the main book which was a little of a let down. I’m giving this series a second go in the summer.

2 Accurate Representation

The Secret Science of Magic by Melissa Keil

I’ve heard this book has an autistic character and I’m yet to come across a book that does this with any believeability. Actually I’ve only come across one book, possibly two that have had autism in. I won’t mention them by name even if I could remember what they were called! One I only got a few pages into before it got something so wrong I was angry for days and the other I was warned away from. (technically I should have said 4 because Rules and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close should be on this list too, but I don’t really want to read them so I’m not sure about those)
I really want this to be accurate and well done! But this too is untraceable where I live – perhaps it’s a small title? It’s from Australia so perhaps it’s yet to come out here…

3 A Good Ending

Ghostly Echoes by William Ritter

You may know by now that I like my endings wrapped up in neat little bows. Or messy bows. Basically, wrapped up. I don’t like open endings because I want them to be safe and happy, none of this possibly safe and maybe happy! I’m hoping that Ghostly Echoes will wrap up Jackaby nicely but I’m collecting them in paperback and the paperback isn’t out yet so I’ve got to wait.

4 Equal Opportunities Rescuing

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

I like it when anybody saves everybody. No stereotypical gender roles. Unfortunately they seem to be getting worse in the world of fiction, not better. (For example the wizard of oz was a very female centred film. You don’t get them like that these days) I’ve seen the film for this and not only does she NOT complain about ‘pre-destined love’ but she breaks the mould and even saves the guy. I’m hoping the book’s the same and that the rest of the series is just as great.

5 Beauty and the Beast Re-Tellings

Hunted by Megan Spooner

I love well done re-tellings. Especially of the big classics. Beauty and the beast is one of my favourites. There are so many things that can be done with it! And this one sounds pretty good. It’s on my wishlist right now because I thought it might be in one of my book boxes but they seemed to have overlooked it and both selected the same book! So sad. But now I can buy it, yay!

6 Well-developed Fantasy Worlds

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski

Great world-building is important to me. I prefer a book where I can visualise exactly what the author wants me to see. I’m hoping The Winner’s Trilogy will satisfy this for me.

7 Different Time Frames

Darkmere by Helen Maslin

I really love a mystery. Especially one that brings the past into the present in some way. Darkmere promises haunted castles and secrets that span centuries! I can’t wait to read it.

8 Historical Fantasies

The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman

I’m really into historical fantasy novels at the moment. I blame Jackaby and The Diviners. The next one on my list is The Dark Days Club.

9 Japanese Mythology

Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

I love learning about different cultures and my eye has been on this Japanese inspired novel for a long time now. I can’t wait to get round to reading it!

10 Trolls

The Broken Ones by Danielle L Jensen

I feel there are very few books about trolls. So when Danielle L Jensen wrote The Stolen Songbird and I found out it was about Trolls who live in a mountain I was so happy. I’ve read book one and I can’t wait to delve back into this series. I’m extra excited at the moment because I just discovered that there is a new prequel novella to go with this series and I managed to get a copy from Netgalley!

Nice lists! Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale, so I’m always up for reading creative retellings. Here is my Top Ten Tuesday

For Beauty and the Beast retellings, have you read the Five Enchanted Roses collection? Five different retellings by five different authors, with a really diverse collection of settings and styles.

You’re right. Good back story is a huge help but does need to be done at the right time/way to hit the mark. I like reading diverse books but there are times when I question if some characters were made diverse with simple generic traits just to be added rather than flushed out and true. And who doesn’t love B&B and all its ways!

What?! Aww man. Now I have to wait even longer for the end! Thank you for letting me know ( :
