“I’m ready to tell them to get down on both knees and call you Queen.”
“I thought you were going somewhere completely different with that.”
“Eh, this is a PG sort of moment.”

Anything can happen once upon a con…

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

I liked that this story was simple and cute. I thought it was well adapted and the the setting was a fantastic setting for a Cinderella retelling. I found it an easy read that flowed well which worked out nicely with the simplicity.

I also liked that Ella and Darien had 3 points of contact before they started to run together. It made it feel more realistic, giving them back story like that. The HEA was also more realistic too. Not too perfect, just enough real-world. I was sad about that at first but after a bit I realised that this fit in with the rest of the story so I let it go.

I also liked that Ella didn’t do a COMPLETE turn around, no one impression of Darien took over, they just sort of merged together into a real person.
I didn’t really feel sorry for Ella. Maybe because I knew it would work out in the end, maybe because it was over the top. Every Cinderella retelling seems to try to out do the others – THESE are the worst step family ever! Whom I DID feel sorry for however was Darien. He was a teen idol and because of this he was ridiculed. As if his success meant nothing because it was a bunch of women that had made him high profile and that didn’t mean anything to the ‘real’ actors.
Unfortunately you see this happening in real life too. Though some of the people concerned are horrid humans, no one deserves to be treated that was.

Overall I found this clever and well done and I may just check out another book by Ashley!
