Thirteen Reasons Why - October 2013

by Jay Asher

You can’t stop the future. You can’t rewind the past. The only way to learn the secret. . . is to press play.
Clay Jensen doesn’t want anything to do with the tapes Hannah Baker made. Hannah is dead. Her secrets should be buried with her.
Then Hannah’s voice tells Clay that his name is on her tapes– and that he is, in some way, responsible for her death.
All through the night, Clay keeps listening. He follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his small town. . .
. . .and what he discovers changes his life forever.

This made me cry. It was so bittersweet and sad. It’s had a recent re-surge thanks to the netflix original show – yes, I’ve watched it – and while I’m annoyed with a few things they changed, I think they did it really well. I also have the audio book as it was recommended in a review I read but I’m yet to read it. Thanks to the show this storyline is still pretty fresh in my mind.

The Assassin’s Curse – January 2014

by Cassandra Rose Clarke

Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to another pirate clan. But that only prompts the scorned clan to send an assassin after her. When Ananna faces him down one night, armed with magic she doesn’t really know how to use, she accidentally activates a curse binding them together.

I remember loving this and my review says I went right into book 2 after this, but other than that I remember very little. I still have then and recently had book 2 returned to me as a friend was borrowing it – so I guess a re-read might be needed?

Vision in White - January 2014

by Nora Roberts

Wedding photographer Mackensie “Mac” Elliot is most at home behind the camera, but her focus is shattered moments before an important wedding rehearsal when she bumps into the bride-to-be’s brother…an encounter that has them both seeing stars.

A stable, safe English teacher, Carter Maguire is definitely not Mac’s type. But a casual fling might be just what she needs to take her mind off bridezillas. Of course, casual flings can turn into something more when you least expect it. And Mac will have to turn to her three best friends-and business partners-to see her way to her own happy ending.

I like how Nora Roberts writes her interactions. Not quite so keen on how she writes some of the women, the ones that require convincing about a relationship, but each woman is different. I have a complete series and the start of another I’m yet to read and I’m looking forward to it! But I’m also a little apprehensive – I’m more aware of faux feminism now and I’m a little concerned I’ll find a tonne of it littered about. Only one way to find out! But generally the romances are adorable and the series are far superior to the stand-alones.

Nearly Gone – March 2014

by Elle Cosimano

He revved the engine and I held tight with both hands as the bike lurched forward, We zoomed down streets, leaning into the curves, wind whipping over me. I pressed into his back until all I could smell was the leather tang of his jacket, and all I could taste was the sweet thrill of flying away.

Keeping secrets is second nature to Nearly Boswell. Living in a trailer park outside Washington, DC, with a mom who works as an exotic dancer, she knows better than to share anything that would make her a target with her classmates. Only her best friends know about her obsession with the personal ads, and Nearly hasn’t told anyone about the emotions she can taste when she brushes against someone’s skin.

Then a serial killer goes on a murder spree and starts attacking students, leaving cryptic ads in the newspaper. Nearly might be the one person who can put all the clues together, and if she doesn’t figure it out soon – she’ll be next.

Big, dark, scary, and brilliantly plotted, Nearly Gone will leave you guessing until the very end.

It’s one of a series?!?! When did that happen?! Not that I remember this book AT ALL! But I’ve just found it on my shelf so I kept it for a reason. Wait, is this the one that mentions Schrödinger’s Cat?! I will have to re-read this.

MARS – September 2014

by Fuyumi Soryo

A bad boy can change a good girl forever. Rei is the school delinquent. Kira is shy and studious. What they see in each other is a mystery to their friends. What they find in each other is a miracle to themselves. With a style that is artistic and chic, this tale of restless and confused high school love will appeal to young women everywhere.

Kira and Rei might as well be from different planets. She’s a shy art student, afraid of boys and hated by her classmates. He’s a rebellious motorcycle racer with girls dropping left and right just to talk to him. Their lives become intertwined when Kira asks Rei to model for her and, to everyone’s surprise, he agrees. As these two battle their personal demons and the pressures of their classmates, they learn not only to love each other, but themselves.

I have no idea what it is about this manga that I love – it’s just ADORABLE! Maybe because they work together? That might be it. I’d like to protest the “A bad boy can change a good girl forever” bit though. He wasn’t REALLY bad and she changed him just as much as he changed her.
Basically an unlikely duo catches each others attention and discovers that they understand each other better than anyone else and so they quite sensibly fall in love and take on the world together. Or something like that. Totally time for a re-read!

I haven’t read any of these, but I did recently watch the Netflix series for 13 Reasons Why. It was so hard to watch. I’m tempted to read the book, but at the same time I’m not sure I can handle it after watching the series. Great list!

I misread the prompt so I did it wrong, lol. Oh well. Here’s mine: http://jennielyse.com/top-ten-tuesday/
