To Ten Tuesday: Books We Can’t Believe We Read

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.
It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This weeks topic is Top Ten Books We Can’t Believe We Read

me before you fangirl eliza and her monsters the ruby circle practical magic pride and prejudice

1 Me Before You

by Jojo Moyes

I’d read The Girl You Left Behind and it was alright but it’s probably not something I’ll read again, plus this has a sad ending and I knew that going in! However, Jojo is one of Ms4Tune’s favourite authors and we were going to the book release of the second book to this one, After You. I left it too late though and I hadn’t actually finished the first book when we got there, but I didn’t mind. I liked it more than The Girl You Left Behind, but I Haven’t yet got up the nerve to read book 2! Or watch the film, which I own…I just know it will make me cry.

2 Fangirl/Eliza and Her Monsters

by Rainbow Rowell/ Francesca Zappia

I’ve put these together because they’re connected.
So I read Fangirl because I wanted to read Carry on – a Harry Potter fanfic satire, who wouldn’t?!  I read Fangirl first because it prompted Carry On and I like things to be in order. I surprisingly really enjoyed Fangirl, more than I think I liked Carry On!
From that I later read about Eliza. Everyone was talking about this book! But I wasn’t interested until it was compared to Fangirl, because I’d liked that so much I decided to give Eliza a change. I ended up liking Eliza the most, much to my surprise. Going into this, I’d have said Carry On would have been my favourite by far.

3 The Ruby Circle

by Richelle Mead

This is the last book in the bloodlines series and I really can’t believe I made it that far. This series was such a let down after Vampire Academy and I really couldn’t forgive Adrian. In the end I think the only reason I read this book was to get to the end AND for any Rose/Dimitri appearances.
I’d read more in this world and I’d probably skim read these to remind myself who everyone is, but that’s as close as I’ll get to this series again.

4 Practical Magic

by Alice Hoffman

What?!
Terrible book. No idea how I made it through. Possibly because I love the film so much and I felt I just HAD to.
Do I think this is awful because I like the film so much? Probably.
Still going to dislike it though.

5 Pride and Prejudice

by Jane Austin

Yeah, I’m putting this on any list applicable….
I never thought I’d be able to read a classic! I always thought it would be too hard for me to read – the language used would require too much concentration and I just wouldn’t get into it. But I’ve read this one and it hasn’t put me off the story!
Periodically I suddenly remember I’ve read this book and I feel pretty damned pleased with myself, because why not?!

6 The Diviners

by Libba Bray

This book was massive. I hadn’t read a book this long in a really long time and I had a huge TBR pile giving me extra pressure to finish it quickly. It was daunting! But my gosh was it good! I loved this book so much that I jumped straight into its even LONGER sequel. I may not believe that I read this but I’m sure glad I did.

7 Days Without End / The Underground Railroad / Wild

by Sebastian Barry / Colson Whitehead / Cheryl Strayed

All these books are completely out of my comfort zone. I picked each of these up because they either won an award, were nominated for an award or were on a YOU MUST READ list somewhere. I like to challenge myself every now and then because you never know what you might find if you do step out of your comfort zone and in the case of The Underground Railroad and Wild this really worked. I really enjoyed them. Days Without End…. not so much. It was cleverly written to mimic the American Accent but it was a hard slog to get through and I didn’t really enjoy the story. But hey look I read something different!

8 Library of Souls

by Ransom Riggs

Boy am I surprised I read this book! Book One was ok (but not as good as I was expecting), Book two was tedious (oh how I wished for it to be over) so why on earth did I read book 3… because I just had to know how it was going to end Derrr…. and to be fair I probably enjoyed this book the most, I think mainly because it tied everything up and I could stop thinking about it! (Probably not the best reason to push your way through a trilogy but I do this quite a lot… I’m planning to read Half Lost next month, for the exact same reason… I’m a gluten for punishment).

9 The Cursed Child

by John Tiffany

When I heard that this book was being published I had a hard time wrestling over whether I would or wouldn’t be reading it… On the one hand it could be amazing and help apease the need I have for more Harry Potter… but at the same time… it could ruin EVERYTHING!!!  Usually when these are the two options I wait for everyone else to read it and then decided what to do based on their opinions but for some reason I preordered this and read it the day it arrived. In some ways I really liked it. It was different because it was a play and it was about Albus not Harry but at the same time it kinda warped how I had imagined Harry, Ron and Hermione to be as adults… I know not everyone is perfect but it was nice to imagine a happily ever after for them…. that’s kinda gone now.

10 Soundless

by Richelle Mead

(Sorry Richelle Mead for also putting you on my half of the list – we love your Vampire Academy series – really we do).

I have no idea why, after reading all the reviews of this book, I still picked this book up. I don’t think I saw one single glowing review and yet, I had hope. Misguided hope… This wasn’t a great story, it wasn’t a great anything to be honest. I really don’t know why I read it.

I realize I should have out Carry On on my list for today. When I first read Fangirl, I said that I hoped the author would never actually write a Simon Snow book because I thought it would ruin Fangirl. But when Carry On came out I read it anyway, and ended up really loving it. And I also struggled with whether or not to read The Cursed Child, but I did and I don’t really regret it. I basically chose to think of it as fanfiction – one idea of what might have happened, but not necessarily a definitive ending. My TTT for today is here: http://www.readathomemom.com/2018/01/i-cant-believe-i-read-whole-thing-books.html

Fangirl is on my list to be read in the next few weeks. After both of my teenaged daughters read – and loved – it, I knew I had to read it, too. My younger girl loves Rainbow Rowell though. :D

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
