Civil war is brewing and the nobleman Conner believes he has the solution. Scouring orphanages, he finds 3 boys with a similar appearance, one of them being a difficult boy named Sage. His plan is to train the boys and choose the most likely to be his puppet prince, an impersonator of the long lost second son of king Eckbert who is presumed dead. Sage is horrified at this act of treason Connor has dragged him into and is disruptive and disinterested in the training forced upon him. But it soon becomes clear to him, the only way to survive is to become the boy Connor will chose for prince.

Competition is high between the boys, but only one can be chosen, the others will die. As more and more truth is revealed, Sage becomes desperate. Will he compete to take a crown he doesn’t want to save those around him?

Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man. FAVOURITE!!!!!

This is sort of a cheat review. This is the third time I’ve read this book. And I want to read it again. So first impressions are alittle fuzzy, but I’ll give it a shot.

When I first read this book I wasn’t that impressed and it took me a while to get into it, I’m not sure why. But I pushed ahead and then my mind just exploded. BEST BOOK EVER! Once I’d read it I immediately wanted to read it again, but as book two was imminent I waited, scared I’d read it too many times and loose the magic I guess. Stupid idea, I’ll never get that awe back. Oh well. My original review tells me that I was disappointed that it took me so long to get into it. (I still read it slow, but that’s for a whole other reason now!)

So, I read it again. Oh my goodness. So many throw away sentences that are hilarious when you’ve read it through once before! (I never finished book 2 on this read through, but that’s a story for that book’s review. Maybe tomorrow. Depends if I manage to read it slowly to savour it or if Ineedtofindoutwhathappensrightnow!!! haha) Again I loved it and I was reluctant to put it down. I started 2, then stopped. Waiting for 3. Which came and I didn’t want it to end so I didn’t read it. But the summer holidays are here and the time has come.

Read through number three: Those throw away sentences and comparison speeches are still funny. But this time I found all the sad ones too. I’ve wanted to cry several times today, reading this. And this time I found it easier to remember he was only 14, I guess you often imagine characters to be the same age as you are so I never really thought about it before. Perhaps it’s because there are so many young people in my life now that it’s enough for me to realise I’m not as young as I remember being, I’m not 14 anymore.

It’s impossible to really describe this book to you without giving away the ending. If you’re reading this book and struggling, please hold out to chapter 42. If you’ve put it down never intending to return, please just quickly read chapter 42!!! You will understand everything. And Hopefully want to read it all over again…

If you’re reading this review to decide if you want to read this book, please do! I don’t think I will ever stop recommending this, it’s such an amazingly clever story. The fact that it’s written from first person too, well that’s a clever character too.  And if, once you’ve read it, you really want to read it again, do that too. For me, because I didn’t and I regret it.
