Top Ten Tuesday : Books with Sensory Reading Memories

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.
It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This weeks topic is Top Ten Books with Sensory Reading Memories

1 Harry Potter

by J K Rowling

So many books and so many memories. I remember listening to the audio book in the car in Spain. Stephen Fry and sharp bends up a mountain in the dark.
Or waiting all day to start the next book because I know I’m going to just burn through it, then staying up most of the night catching up because that was a silly idea and just one more chapter…

2 The Bone Season

by Samantha Shannon

I remember reading this at YALC 2017 in the queues, trying to finish it before meeting Samantha. She was my last person of the day and I was peopled out and I worry I was rude.
Pretty sure I finished it! Totally regret not asking for pens matching the book covers too!

3 The Smoke Thieves

by Sally Green

This book makes me think of reading at the bottom of the garden with a cup of tea when everything was green. It’s all dried up now due to the heat, but I remember a breeze…something to remember next time I have a moment, especially as it’s going to get hotter…

4 Me Before You

by JoJo Moyes

I was still reading this on the train up to the book signing of After You with Ms4Tune. I didn’t finish it, but I basically knew what was going to happen so the reading of book 2 wasn’t too much of a shock. I don’t know why I bothered trying to read it on the train to be honest, I knew I wasn’t going to finish it! But that’s what I remember.

5 The Lord of the Rings

by J R R Tolkien

I listened to these on audiobook and they will now forever remind me of the summer I spent clearing out the garage with my parents. It was the worst summer ever because I started the new year at work just as exhausted and fed up as I had been the end of the prior one. Never doing anything that again, no matter how much they ask. I’ll help, obviously but not so that it tales the whole summer.

6 Forbidden Game

by L J Smith

This series was amazing. I was so addicted to it. So much so that I used to read this instead of the book we were supposed to be reading in English class. Everytime I pick these up and see these covers, I get a cheeky grin as I remember sitting with it inside my copy of Romeo and Juliet lol. My heart still raises at the thought of Julian and the thought of getting caught!

7 The Colour of Magic

by Terry Pratchett

I took this book on the first holiday abroad with the boyfriend (now husband). We were away in France with all of his family and we were given a stuffy attic room to sleep in. Proved to be the best room in the house because no one ever came up there and I was able to read without being interrupted. I still remember the arguments I could hear from the kitchen downstairs as 12 people tried to make decisions for dinner. Awww family politics… We’ve needed 10 years before we could attempt another self catered holiday all together..,

8 The Nightworld Series

by L J Smith

Another L J Smith series. This time it’s a specific edition that brings back sensory memories. I bought the omnibus editions before going on holiday to France on a skiing trip. (I’d never skied before and will never again – not for me at all! but always willing to give something a go). Anyway, When I think of these books I still remember the sheer terror I felt and how these books helped me unwind at the end of a day full of shieking and crying… (as I said really not for me).

9 The 100, A Little Something Different, Every Ugly Word

So I’d just got married to my best friend and we were jetting off to Mexico on our honeymoon and I was really really excited because I’d just been accepted on Netgalley for the first time! and I got these three books to read. Obviously I read them all while lounging by the pool, and when i think of these books I remember being mugged by Coati’s for my food and beverages, sleeping away the day and just having an amazing time in an amazing place with the best person in the world. They may not have all been happy books but they bring back happy memories.

10 The Traitor Throne

by Alwyn Hamilton

I really struggled to read while pregnant because I was just so tired all the time and when my little Magpie arrived I was even more tired. I don’t think anyone can truly understand exhaustion till you’ve been kept awake for days by a, very very cute but ultimately, sleep Nazi! Anyway during one of those unexpected moments of sheer bliss (Ie when shes fallen asleep) I picked up The Traitor Throne and I remember falling in love all over again with Alwyn Hamilton’s writing and world building. It was just what I needed and I found it so easy to dip in and out of whenever I had the chance.

“This book makes me think of reading at the bottom of the garden with a cup of tea when everything was green.” sets such a lovely image and memory.

So many great picks from both of you! Harry Potter is always a must. I love seeing some L.J. Smith and Kass Morgan.
