Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Novellas/Short Stories

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.
It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This weeks topic is Top Ten Favorite Novellas/Short Stories

fantastic beasts Broken Banners the assassin and the empire wintermoon Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists

1 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

by Newt Scamander, J.K. Rowling & Eddie Redmayne (Narrator)

This is the most amazing book! Especially the updated version as an audio-book, because it’s read by Eddie Redmayne AS Newt Scamander!
It’s a fantastic tie-in to the films and I’d recommend it.

2 Broken Banners (A Reaper of Stone #2, Echoes of the Ascended #5)

by Mark Gelineau and Joe King

A short story list wouldn’t be complete without us featuring a Mark/Joe story each.
Ms4Tune sums up the situation surrounding these books quite succinctly below.
These short stories had a pretty unique set up in that there were 4 interlocking series within a larger world. We had different favourites and while this one and Best Left in the Shadows were both pretty darn interesting to me, I’m pretty sure this one was winning when last I visited this world.

The Assassin and the Empire (Throne of Glass 0.5)

by Sarah J. Maas

Aaaahhhhhhh!! I don’t usually choose stories that break my heart – but sometimes they sneak up on you and it’s too late. I do think this would have been better had Throne of Glass been written AFTER this, because her attitude in that would have been far more compatible, but I know that’s not how this works. This is the short story that made me stick through Throne of Glass and I always recommend that these are read before that.

4 Moontide

By Mercedes Lackey

I have no idea where this fits into her different worlds and if anyone knows, please tell me. I want to read more about this school! It’s amazing and so is Moira.
Also, it’s an utterly adorable romance.

Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists (Pottermore Presents #2)

by J.K. Rowling

Yes, another Harry Potter one, but I LOVED the part about the Department of Mysteries and I couldn’t not mention it! I did indeed create a sign for the door at work.
This series was so informative and while some were more interesting than others, I found the extra information fascinating.

I haven’t read many short stories or novellas recently so these are a bit old…

Suffocate Rend the Dark sleeper girl from above curse girl

6 Suffocate (The Breathless #1)

by S R Johannes

This was a really interesting dystopian novella which I read back in 2012. It had only just been released and I remember being really excited to read the next instalment but its release was delayed and I kinda forgot about it. I actually can’t find these novellas anyway! I’ve googled and everything! Any ideas?

7 Rend the Dark (Echoes of the Ascended #2, Rend the Dark #1)

by Mark Gelineau and Joe King

I absolutely loved this mini series but after eight books everything went a bit quiet… not sure why, and a little devastated that I’ve been left hanging, but I hope these guys get back to writing soon, it has been 2 years after all! This book is a dark, fantasy horror that had me on the edge of my seat.

8 The Sleeper and the Spindle

by Neil Gaiman

A beautifully illustrated retelling of sleeping beauty with a twist. Totally worth it just for the artwork.

9 Girl from Above: Betrayal (The 1000 Revolution #1)

by Pippa DaCosta

I either love or I hate this authors work, but this short story was one of her best. A wonderful little Sci-Fi that reminded me of Serenity for some reason. Firefly forever!

10 The Curse Girl

by Kate Avery Elliston

A Beauty and the Beast retelling which I thought was adorably sweet. I read this before the market was flooded with B & B retellings (back in 2012!) so it may not stand up to all the others now… but at the time :)

Great list! I’ve read some of Neil Gaiman’s novels, but I’ve never tried his shorter work. I love the Hogwarts books. I only own 1 of them, but I look at them whenever I go to the store.
