Top Ten Tuesday: Things That Make Us Pick Up a Book

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.
It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This weeks topic is Things That Make Us Pick Up a Book

1 Something new

If a story is unique, or has done an old trope in a new way then that’s going to be interesting.

2 Female characters

Sounds silly, right? But it’s crazy how many books and films are lacking in women! It has to be a pretty special and/or well written item to keep my interest while missing half the population these days.
The token love interest doesn’t count either.
Bonus points for women who won’t take any crap, because women just have it rough in general and I do love it when they even the odds.

3 Romantic subplot

I love a romantic subplot, it’s my favourite kind of romance. Action, adventure, slightly weird creatures that only come out at night and a romantic subplot?
You’ve got me.
I prefer them to romantic main plots most of the time but not always.
Also majorly prefer them to “I love you, but I need no man!” subplots too. Sure, you might not need a man to look after you, but everyone needs someone to watch their back…

4 The promise of teamwork

What I love, after the romantic subplot, is a story where the love interests have to work together and come together as a team as well as a romantic pair. No more of this “Oh, we’ve just fallen in love and now we must part ways for the good of the….whatever.” Give me a couple who fall in love and then work together to defeat the big bad!
Any recommendations?

5 Retellings

Ok, kind of like number one to be fair, but not really…? I don’t exactly want my retellings WAY out there, the reason I’m after a retelling is because I want to read the same again, but just a tiny bit different. Essentially a different story with the same pay off;  the heart of the story still has to be there somewhere.

6 If there is any mention of Thieves

I guess my love of thieves stems from watching Robin Hood Prince of Thieves on repeat when I was younger. I can’t help it, the thought of living day to day, free but on the other side of the law, knowing what you’re doing is sort of right but sort of wrong, is exciting to me.

7 Dragons

I love any novel that can properly bring to life this mystical creature!

8 If it’s written by V E Schwab

Self explanatory really.

9 If the blurb mentions coffee shops and/or book shops

I don’t know why but I can’t resist a book thatch based around characters that enjoy coffee shops and book shops, I suppose its because they sound like me?

10 If there is a woman holding a weapon on the cover

Paein, I love me some strong female characters, too! There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a woman who won’t take anyone’s crap and can handle herself.

Ms4tune, so much yes to thieves and dragons! Though, I’ll also settle for assassins rather than thieves. And yes to V.E. Schwab. I’m planning on checking out The Near Witch when my library gets it in because … well, Schwab. xD

    Here’s my TTT post.
