When she was ten, Ruby survived the mysterious illness killing off most of America’s children, but it wasn’t without cost. Locked in a ‘rehabilitation camp’ she and her camp mates are watched like hawks; they all developed varying and alarming abilities they are forbidden to use at any cost. Even the accidental uses are punished. Colour-coded for identification, Ruby is lucky enough to be mislabelled as a lesser power, but as she reaches sixteen her grace period is up; they know. Barely escaping with her life she manages to meet up with a group of kids trying to get to East River; a safe haven for kids like them. But when they get there it’s not all as they thought and Ruby will have to go it alone until she can save those she’s come to care for. But if Ruby has learnt anything, it’s how to bide her time.

I certainly shot myself in the foot while reading this book. (not literally…) It was past bedtime and I didn’t want to put it down so I put my bookmark in and then…skimmed ahead (this is the process whereby you’re not quite reading, but you get the gist of what’s going on, you still need to go back and re-read it for what you missed, but sometimes that’s just too meh). I KNOW, I KNOW! I tell everyone else to NOT DO THIS and I still do it. To top it off I got excited about something else in the middle too, this poor book.
There were a few things that thinking back, were a little odd. Camp having haircuts once a year wasn’t, but wouldn’t have cutting the girls hair short or even all off have saved shampoo and water bills? Especially in depleted America? Maybe I’m just cruel.
I do intend to read the rest of this series, but I’ll wait for the paperbacks. It will give me time to get over the little bit of a MEH I suffered in the middle.
