“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event originally hosted on Breaking The Spine. The book I’ve chosen today is Shadow Study by Maria V Snyder.

Once, only her own life hung in the balance.

Oddly enough, when Yelena was a poison taster, her life was simpler. But she’d survived to become a vital part of the balance of power between rival countries Ixia and Sitia. Now she uses her magic to keep the peace in both lands and protect her relationship with Valek.

Suddenly, though, they are beset on all sides by those vying for power through politics and intrigue. Valek’s job – and his life – are in danger. As Yelena tries to uncover the scope of these plots, she faces a new challenge: her magic is blocked. She must keep that a secret – or her enemies will discover just how vulnerable she really is – while searching for who or what is responsible for neutralizing her powers.

Yes, the days of tasting poisons were much simpler. And certainly not as dangerous,-Goodreads

For those of you who haven’t yet read this series (please don’t read them out of order like I did. The STUDY series is first, then the GLASS series…Makes more sense that way) it starts in Poison Study when Yelena, who has been sentenced to death, is pulled in front of Valek – the Chief of Security – and offered her life in the form of Poison Taster for the Commander of the country. She’s kept on a leash, requiring a daily dose of antidote for a poison in her blood, but this isn’t her biggest concern. The family of the man she killed wants her dead and there’s the small issue of developing magic in a country that has outlawed it…..

I’ve read a lot (if not all) of Maria V Snyder’s books and I think the study series are by far my favourite so I’m glad that Valek and Yelena are getting another [three] book[s]. I’d certainly like more of an explanation of how their relationship works!! I’d also love to see more of Valek, because he’s worth the page time! I’m hoping that no second book traps happen, even though this is technically book 4. I’d also like to know some more about the Commander and his past…Basically I cant wait!
