Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s Top Ten Books I Will Probably Never Read .
Paein
1 Uglies
by Scott Westerfeld
The premise of this book makes it sound like she needs to betray her friend to become pretty and that’s just not something I feel I could read without getting angry, both for the possible betrayal but also for the ‘becoming pretty’ bit too – we already have the media telling us we’re not pretty enough, I don’t need a book telling me the same thing.
2 Wolf Hall
by Hilary Mantel
I picked this up at a charity event. I like history and I like novels but I really don’t like history novels, I have no idea why I even bought it. Has anyone read this? What is it like?
3 Rooms
by Lauren Oliver
I also picked this up at a charity event, mainly because I’m a fan of some of her work and thought I’d try her adult novel. I’m not sure it’s the type of thing that I’ll read with so many other more interesting books around, especially with my new 3-year rule!
4 The Boy Next Door
by Josie Lloyd, Emlyn Rees
I’m not even sure where this book has come from, it’s the sort of book that saddens me even thinking about it, seperated for 15 years then getting together again and disrupting those in their lives? I really don’t think I’ll be reading it.
5 Looking for Alaska
by John Green
Ms4Tune
6 Game of Thrones
by George R R Martin
I was given a set of the Game of Thrones set (1-4) and I also have 1 and 2 on my kindle and yet… I feel like as much as I like the idea of reading the books, the likelihood is I will never get round to read these. Still I will stay optimistic and keep the books on my shelf.
7 1001 Books to Read Before You Die
by Peter Boxall
I like to use this for reference every now and then, and flick through the pictures… however I doubt I will ever sit and read the whole thing.
8 The Awakening
by Kelley Armstrong
This is book two of Darkest Powers. I read The Summoning (#1) back in 2012 and have The Awakening on the shelf but I can hardly remember what book one was about only a vague notion of it being a little disappointing.
Perhaps someone could let me know whether its worth continuing or whether I should just relegate this to the charity box?
9 The Fire Walker
by Josephine Angelini
I was really excited when I received World Walker book #1 – Trial by Fire. I had high hope! But the reality was quite the opposite.
I found the characters sooo annoying and the plot rather dull. I will not be continuing this series so can say with confidence that I will never read Fire Walker.
10 Wither
by Lauren DeStefano
I own this one too. But after re-reading the blurb, I can’t remember why I bought it.
Perhaps someone who’s read it could let me know whether its worth reading.
@Paein I have to say that I am little apprehensive approaching Uglies too. It doesn’t sound very good but its so hyped I don’t know if I should cave in and just give it a go…? While I didn’t like The Fault in Our Stars, I have to say that I really enjoyed Looking for Alaska. I don’t think it’s everyone’s sort of book though, and yes, its kind of sad so if that isn’t your thing stay clear of it!
@Ms4tune I really didn’t like The Summoning – I though it was awful to be honest but I really enjoyed the second book in the series. I don’t remember how or why but it just clicked for me and I found it much, much better. I also really wouldn’t recommend Wither – it was terrible and the second book in the series was even worse!
Rachel @ Rachel’s Reading Corner
Hi Rachel! If you do decide to give it a go, I’d love to hear what you think! Ah yes, The Fault in Our Stars is another one I don’t want to read (or see the film for), just too sad looking!!
I’ve read the first three Uglies book, but I don’t think I will continue the series. You’re right the message of the book is terrible, I don’t want to hurt the author but it’s kind of obvious that not a woman wrote the book and not someone who’s familiar with feeling insecure. I found the books good, though I read them like 5 years ago. I really want to read Rooms, even though all the negative reviews made me hesitant.
I’m not sure you should read The Awakening. While I enjoyed the trilogy I can’t really remember much of it and it left me underwhelmed. I’m sorry you didn’t like Trial by Fire, I really enjoyed that book, though the characters definitely could have been better. I have huge hopes for the next book.
PS: I LOVE the voodoo dolls.
Veronika @ My TTT
Hello Veronika! thank you, the voodoos are homemade ( :
Perhaps the author was trying to highlight the ridiculousness of media today, but I still don’t want to read it! I didn’t realise Rooms had bad reviews, I don’t tend to look at reviews until after I’ve read and reviewed it myself, I feel I’m too easily swayed by what other people say, which is annoying. Maybe I will keep a hold of Rooms just a little longer then.
I have never felt the urge to read Uglies never have and never will…
Top Ten Tuesday
I also included The Game of Thrones on my list. I however, loved Looking for Alaska it’s one of my favorite books. But it is definitely sad.
