With each passing day, Kelsea Glynn is growing into her new responsibilities as Queen of the Tearling. By stopping the shipments of slaves to the neighbouring kingdom of Mortmesne, she crossed the Red Queen, a brutal ruler whose power derives from dark magic, who is sending her fearsome army into the Tearling to take what is hers. And nothing can stop the invasion.
But as the Mort army draws ever closer, Kelsea develops a mysterious connection to a time before the Crossing, and she finds herself relying on a strange and possibly dangerous ally: a woman named Lily, fighting for her life in a world where being female can feel like a crime. The fate of the Tearling – and that of Kelsea’s own soul – may rest with Lily and her story, but Kelsea may not have enough time to find out.
In this dazzling sequel to her bestselling debut The Queen of the Tearling, Erika Johansen brings back favourite characters, including the Mace and the Red Queen, and introduces unforgettable new players, adding exciting layers to her multidimensional tale of magic, mystery and a fierce young heroine.

I was so excited when I received this one from Netgalley and I was devastated I couldn’t read it right away. I didn’t like this one quite so much as the first but it was still worth more than 4 Voodoos! There was all the parts that I loved from the first one, the future book excerpt quotes at the start of each chapter and the long haul lines about looking back at this event or that time. But what I didn’t like so much was the choices she had to make and the fact that she had to make them. Sometimes I felt she was almost out of character, but then she was in a situation with no good choices and I think the worst bit is wondering if you’d have made the same choices, or worse ones. In the end though, I think her true self came through and I’m wondering now, what will happen next.

With this book we get the added storyline of Lily, a woman from before The Crossing. At first her life seems uninteresting and unimportant, but I wondered about a few things early on and I was proved correct on both points which was nice. I liked Lily and Jonathan and William Tear. I hope that we get more of their story in the next book. There is something so obviously hinted at and I really want to see it, see how it happened and what happened after. I wonder if something important started then, with these people, that is relevant now.
And I so hope the supposed Holy Father gets his. With all his hypocrisy and foulness. In many ways he’s worse than the Red Queen because he seems to enjoy it all and the worst bit is, he’s not even devout, that isn’t an excuse.

Most annoyingly this book did not give many answers (except some with regards to The Crossing and WHEN and who the Red Queen is….which is actually quite a few answers now I think about it) but it did raise more questions. WHO is The Fetch? Did he do something like Row? What was it that Row did?! Where did the Sapphires come from? Is any of this related to the people of the past? And who the %^$&! is her father?! (We now know this is an important point and I have a theory and I hope I’m wrong.) Someone we’ve met in passing? Someone we know well? Someone we’ve never met? I need to know!
