Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s Ten Characters Who Are Fellow Book Nerds (love reading, are writers, work at a bookstore, etc.) (inspired by my Top Ten Characters Who Love Words)
Paein
By Naomi Novik
I’ve named The Dragon because his love of books has caused those in the villages around him to have a high book count.
“His only extravagance was books. We were well read by the standards of villagers, because he would pay fold for a single great tome and so the book-peddlers came all this way, even though our valley was at the very edge of Polnya. And as long as they were coming, they filled up the saddlebags of their mules with whatever worn-out or cheaper stock of books they had and sold them to us for our pennies. It was a poop house in the valley that didn’t have at least two or three books proudly displayed upon the walls.”
2 Lucern from Single White Vampire (Argeneau #3)
by Lynsay Sands
The main character in this is a writer! Accidentally, of vampire romance. (you’ll have to read to see why it’s an accident!) I’m looking forward to re-reading this series next year…
” “‘Dear Mr. Argeneau,’” she began. ” ‘I haven’t read Love Bites, One, but I will, I guarantee it. I just finished Love Bites, Two, and thought it was wonderful. Etienne was so sweet and funny and sexy that I fell in love with him even as Rachel did. He’s my dream man.’” Kate paused and glanced up expectantly. “What would you say to those letters?”
That was easy enough. “Etienne is taken.” “
3 Clare from The Next Always (Inn BoonsBoro #1)
By Nora Roberts
In this book Clare owns a wonderful book/coffee shop called Turn The Page. I love the interaction between brothers in Nora Roberts books and this series is no exception
“The moment shes seen the old town house just off The Square, she’d known it would be her place. She could still remember the excitement and the nerves when she’d taken the leap of faith. But somehow, investing so much of the lump sum the army provided to the spouses of the fallen had made Clint part of what she’d done.
What she’d needed to do for herself and her children.
Buying the property, creating the business plan, opening accounts, buying supplies –and books, books, books.”
4 Tory from Acheron (Dark-Hunters #8)
By Sherrilyn Kenyon
This book broke my heart, but I can’t wait to read it again next year and to get on to the brother book, Styxx. I chose this book and this character because I remember a situation where she basically said “I’ve read a book for that.”. Unfortunately I can’t dig out my book and hunt it down as our roof is STILL being done, so you’ll have to settle for the only one I could find containing a book and go read it yourselves:
“ “They didn’t have novels back then.”
“History says they didn’t have books, yet what’s this thing in my hand? It’s square, bound paper that’s been written on. Looks like a book to me.”
“Thank you, Captain Sarcasm. How nice of you to join us again.” “
5 Hermione from Harry Potter
By J. K . Rowling
Really, she had to be on the list somewhere, didn’t she? The smartest witch for her age, or whatever it was they called her (other than mudblood). The brains behind The Trio.
“Harry — I think I’ve just understood something! I’ve got to go to the library!”
And she sprinted away, up the stairs.
“What does she understand?” said Harry distractedly, still looking around, trying to tell where the voice had come from.
“Loads more than I do,” said Ron, shaking his head.
“But why’s she got to go to the library?”
“Because that’s what Hermione does,” said Ron, shrugging. “When in doubt, go to the library.”

6 Katy from Obsidian
by J L Armentrout
I really enjoyed Obsidian. It was a bit cheesy in places but it reminded me of Roswell. Katy was a fellow blogger…
“I was always able to lose myself in reading. Books were a necessary escape I always gladly jumped into headfirst.”
“Once I got home, though, and saw several packages on my front porch, all the crap from the day disappeared. A few had smiley faces on them. Squealing, I grabbed the boxes. Books were inside– new release books I’d preordered weeks ago.”
7 Juliette Ferrars from Shatter Me
by Tahereh Mafi
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Shatter Me, I found the writing a little too flowery. But Juliette was obviously a bookworm so she makes this list.
“I spent my life folded between the pages of books. In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”
8 Echo from The Girl at Midnight
by Melissa Grey
I seem to mention this book every week now. But I did love it and as Echo lived in a Library it’s no surprise that she loves a book or two!
“…I like to be around all these books. They’re very good at making you forget your troubles. It’s like having a million friends, wrapped in paper and scrawled in ink”
9 Jo March from Little Women/ Jo’s Boys
by Louisa May Alcott
I’ve only actually read Little Women but Jo March was one of the first bookworms that I fell in love with.
“…books are always good company if you have the right sort. Let me pick out some for you.’ And Mrs. Jo made a bee-line to the well-laden shelves, which were the joy of her heart and the comfort of her life.” (Jo’s Boys)
10 Matilda Wormwood from Matilda
by Roald Dahl
I felt I couldn’t leave Matilda out as she really was the first book nerd I fell in love with!
“So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.”
Great list. I totally forgot about The Dragon, he’s a great pick!
Great list. Matilda was one of my favorite books and movies when I was a kid. Hermione made my list, too.
Hermione and Matilda…YES!! Brilliant picks haha, I recently saw the Matilda theatre show and it made me rekindle my love for that book and Roald Dahl Here’s my TTT if you would like to check it out Have a great day!
