Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read/Want To Read

pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s Ten Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read/Want To Read (or you could do fairytales I want to be retold or fairytales I love)

1 Read: A Court of Thorns and Roses

by Sarah J. Maas

This one is spectacular. A fairytale retelling in the form of a Faerie tale…It’s Beauty and the Beast meets the Faerie High Court and I thought it as just so clever. I’m looking forward to what happens next, which is due out next year, yay!…

2 To Re-Read: The Fairy Godmother

by Mercedes Lackey

This is an interesting series. It’s contents is on the adult side and is set in a world where a force influences people whose lives follow a certain pattern, for example: young girl, no father, two step-sisters and a step-mother into following a certain path. However when something is off, the prince is 2 for example, then things get really interesting and this is the story of what happens then. Looking forward to re-reading this as part of my series challenge I’ve set myself for next year.

3 To Read: The Looking Glass Wars

by Frank Beddor

I’ve had this one on my shelves for a while to be honest with you. It only just escapes this years read it or lose it challenge and if I haven’t read it in a few years, then it will go into the next one. It’s not that I don’t want to read it, I really do! but I have too many books that I own and want to read and new ones are always coming out! This is a re-telling of Alice in Wonderland

4 Read: Ever After: A Cinderella Story

by Wendy Loggia

I actually think I read this before I saw the film, though it’s based off the screenplay, because I prefer the details of THIS ending over that one, But it’s hard to remember, I’ve loved them both for years. A Cinderella story with claims to being the origin of the tale, this is about a girl who needs no rescuing and the man she falls in love with, who just happens to be the future king.

5 To Read: The Golden Braid

by Melanie Dickerson

Rapunzel! Just like Cinderella in Ever After, she needs no rescuing, though she sounds like she’s more of a warrior and I can’t wait to find out what sort of trouble she gets herself into.

It has to be said that Paein and I are Fairytale Retelling junkies!

..

6 Read: The Swan Kingdom

by Zoe Marriott

Retelling of The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen.
I read this back in 2012, I’d never heard of the original story but I still really enjoyed this one. It had a lovely classic fairytale vibe.

7 Want to Read: The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly

by Stephanie Oakes

Retelling of The Handless Maiden by The Brothers Grimm.
With all the amazing reviews on this one it would be stupid to ignore it. I’m hoping to read this really soon.

8 Read: The Curse Girl

by Kate Avery Ellison

Retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.
This was a really cute adaptation. It had the addition of a Fae type storyline which I really enjoyed. And just look at that cover! Gorgeous!

9 Want to Read: Sisters Red

by Jackson Pearce

Retelling of Little Red Riding-Hood (A European Folk-lore) first published by Charles Perrault.
I bought this years ago, when it had just come out. I remember so many people talking about it. I’m not sure why I never got round to reading it, but perhaps I will get the chance to read it soon.

10 Read: Cinder

by Marissa Meyer

Cinderella/The Little Glass Slipper (A European folk-lore) adapted by Charles Perrault (under the name Cendrillion) <- Apparently he added the pumpkin, glass slipper and the fairy godmother!
Cinder is probably on everyone’s list but Paein and I both love this retelling so it had to go on our list too. You can resist a cinderella story that centers around a cyborg! We’re so excited to read Winter which is out at the end of this year.

There was a time when the book version of everything seemed to be around, I think I originally found it in the library back when I was going weekly. Then I bought it because it was amazing! I may have even read it before the film too.
      Love your list too!

Great list, ladies. I’ve only read one of these, though. (Cinder, of course.) There are a couple more that I know I want to (The Fairy Godmother and The Looking Glass Wars) but a lot more that I’ve either forgotten about (mainly The Curse Girl. I don’t know why I don’t have it on my tbr list) or that I’d never even heard of, so I’m off to look into them now.

Meyer and Maas made my list this week too. I cannot wait for Winter and I literally just bought all the books Maas has published haha. Great list this week!

Hi Jazmin, I’ve got a lot of catching up to do with both Meyer and Maas. Can’t wait for Winter either and Queen of Shadows! Thanks for stopping by.
      Happy Reading.
