Lasair Faol, Master of the Fade-Hounds to the Royal court of the Demesne of Fire in the Fae Realm, has been exiled to the human world by the Princess Consort for failing to catch her son’s kidnapper. Bryce Newhouse, Greenwich Village investment banker, is universally loathed by all who know him. Generally, he’s perfectly cool with that, but he discovers what he’s been missing—literally — when he finds Lasair chained in his basement.

Bryce was supposed to receive half of Lasair’s soul at his birth, but thanks to the Fae of Purgatory, the Pattern — the portal between the worlds — has been damaged, and Bryce’s soul arrived 31 years too late. Now the exiled Fae is the shunned human’s only hope of healing his broken past. And with the fate of two worlds riding on that healing, Lasair is going to have to overcome both his race’s innate mistrust of genuine emotion and his own very unFae awkwardness, to have any chance of reaching Bryce’s impenetrable heart.

My review of #1 Hard as Stone can be found HERE, my review for #2 Gale Force, HERE, my review for #3 Deep Plunge HERE and #4 Firestorm HERE.

So, I have to admit that going into this I sort of wondered if this was just sort of an extention to the story, we’d had one of each element and what was this extra book about? But I’m happy to report this is not the case because past events have reason that are revealed in this book.

Also, this time, I got the feeling from the writing that there was indeed more to the characters that we didn’t get. These guys had just the same amount of back story as all the others but this time I could feel what wasn’t said, which was a shame, I’d have liked more explanations as to their whys and wherefores.

As always, we see all the old guys, though they seemed to take more of a backseat in this one, perhaps because we have history with Bryce. We’ve met him before and he’s interacted with our guys so we get a little perspective on his side of things too. Having already read chapter 1 I sort of skipped that and dove right in. I think that Lasair might just be a favourite. Each couple so far has had a ‘point’ something they can do that’s helpful and while we sort of see that of Bryce and Lasair, it’s never truely confirmed or put in words, which sort of sucks. The book feels like it ends prematurely. What happened at the start of book 1 is happening at the end of book 5. It’s slowly progressed through the books. Hopefully it’s not in the epilogue in any future books!

Unfortunately Bryce does NOT get rid of the mustache…but there is, however, a fae doggie! So adorable. There was also a preview for the next book, but I have to say I sort of hope it’s the last one. While I’ve enjoyed this world and though the fight with the big bad can go on forever I’m sure, everything has a time to end and the skill is in realising this. That said, I look forward to seeing what happens next!
