Spinning Starlight the nine lives of chloe kingMe Before You A Knot in the Grain and Other Stories Winter

Spinning Starlight

by R.C. Lewis

YAY! A fairytale retelling! I’ve had this on pre-order for forever and I’m hoping that I can read it when I get it. One of the lesser re-told stories, it sounds intriguing.

Sixteen-year-old heiress and paparazzi darling Liddi Jantzen hates the spotlight. But as the only daughter in the most powerful tech family in the galaxy, it’s hard to escape it. So when a group of men show up at her house uninvited, she assumes it’s just the usual media-grubs. That is, until shots are fired.

Liddi escapes, only to be pulled into an interplanetary conspiracy more complex than she ever could have imagined. Her older brothers have been caught as well, trapped in the conduits between the planets. And when their captor implants a device in Liddi’s vocal cords to monitor her speech, their lives are in her hands: One word and her brothers are dead.

Desperate to save her family from a desolate future, Liddi travels to another world, where she meets the one person who might have the skills to help her bring her eight brothers home-a handsome dignitary named Tiav. But without her voice, Liddi must use every bit of her strength and wit to convince Tiav that her mission is true. With the tenuous balance of the planets deeply intertwined with her brothers’ survival, just how much is Liddi willing to sacrifice to bring them back?

Haunting and mesmerizing, this retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’sThe Wild Swans strings the heart of the classic with a stunning, imaginative world as a star-crossed family fights for survival in this companion to Stitching Snow.

2 The Nine Lives of Chloe King

by Liz Braswell

I’ve decided to read this one this year, I think it’s three in one and it’s not little! I’m curious and scared at the same time

DYING CAN REALLY CHANGE A GIRL’S LIFE.
Chloe King is a normal girl. She goes to class (most of the time), fights with her mom, and crushes on a boy… or two. But around her sixteenth birthday, Chloe finds that perhaps she isn’t so normal after all. There’s the heightened night vision, the super fast reflexes – oh, and the claws.
As she discovers who she is – and where she comes from – it is clear she is not alone. And someone is out to get her.
Chloe has nine lives. But will nine be enough?

3 Me Before You

by JoJo Moyes

I’m hoping to read this one this week actually! Just so that I know what’s going on on Thursday.

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.
What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane.
Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that.
What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.

4  A Knot in the Grain and Other Stories

by Robin McKinley

I want to read this one because apparently it relates to the world of The Hero and the Crown, it’s also a book of short stories and I intent to use it for my ‘short stories’ book.

1 Lily. She has the power to heal, but no speech – until a mage hears words from her mind.
2 Ruen. The princess was abandoned by her uncle deep in a cave to die at the hands of a stagman – who will surprise fate.
3 Erana. Given as a babe to a witch, raised beside the witch’s troll son, she learns love comes in many forms.
4 Coral. The lovely newcomer consents to marry an older widower who soon wonders why she wants to live at Butter Hill Farm.
5 Annabelle. In the attic of their new house, the teen finds a knot that leads her on a magical mission.

5  The Lunar Chronicles/Winter

by Marissa Meyer

Technically this could be my whole five, Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Fairest, Winter. But I’m counting the series as 1. Because Technically I’ll be reading Winter, but I do like to re-read a series!

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.
Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend–the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.
Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

6 The Illumination Paradox

by Jacqueline Garlick

I have Review Copies of books one (Lumiere) and two (Noir) from this beautiful new steam-punk series. I’m hoping the covers aren’t the only awesome thing! But gosh, isn’t it beautiful! I will let you know what I discover as soon as possible.

One determined girl. One resourceful boy. One miracle machine that could destroy everything.

After an unexplained flash shatters her world, seventeen-year-old Eyelet Elsworth sets out to find the Illuminator, her father’s prized invention. With it, she hopes to cure herself of her debilitating seizures before Professor Smrt—her father’s arch nemesis—discovers her secret and locks her away in an asylum.

Pursued by Smrt, Eyelet locates the Illuminator only to see it whisked away. She follows the thief into the world of the unknown, compelled not only by her quest but by the allure of the stranger—Urlick Babbit—who harbors secrets of his own.

Together, they endure deadly Vapours and criminal-infested woods in pursuit of the same prize, only to discover the miracle machine they hoped would solve their problems may in fact be their biggest problem of all.

7 Station Eleven

by Emily St. John Mandel

I actually received an ARC of this book but I never got round to reading it! I will be rectifying this this month! It was nominated for quite a few awards last year so I’m hoping for something special!

One snowy night Arthur Leander, a famous actor, has a heart attack onstage during a production of King Lear. Jeevan Chaudhary, a paparazzo-turned-EMT, is in the audience and leaps to his aid. A child actress named Kirsten Raymonde watches in horror as Jeevan performs CPR, pumping Arthur’s chest as the curtain drops, but Arthur is dead. That same night, as Jeevan walks home from the theater, a terrible flu begins to spread. Hospitals are flooded and Jeevan and his brother barricade themselves inside an apartment, watching out the window as cars clog the highways, gunshots ring out, and life disintegrates around them.

Fifteen years later, Kirsten is an actress with the Traveling Symphony. Together, this small troupe moves between the settlements of an altered world, performing Shakespeare and music for scattered communities of survivors. Written on their caravan, and tattooed on Kirsten’s arm is a line from Star Trek: “Because survival is insufficient.” But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who digs graves for anyone who dares to leave.

Spanning decades, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, this suspenseful, elegiac novel is rife with beauty. As Arthur falls in and out of love, as Jeevan watches the newscasters say their final good-byes, and as Kirsten finds herself caught in the crosshairs of the prophet, we see the strange twists of fate that connect them all. A novel of art, memory, and ambition, Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.

8 Hurry Up and Wait

by Isabel Ashdown

I was searching for a book with an antonym in the title (which I have found means a word opposite in meaning to another) for my 2015 Reading Challenge and I found Hurry Up and Wait on my book shelf. I couldn’t believe my luck. I thought I was going to have to go with a generic Light/Dark, Up/Down or Yes/No choice. So I’m quite happy with my find! I can’t believe how far behind I am with this challenge, I’m really gonna have to get a wiggle on if I ever stand a chance of finishing it!

It’s more than twenty years since Sarah Ribbons last set foot inside her old high school, a crumbling Victorian-built comprehensive on the south coast of England. Now, as she prepares for her school reunion, 39-year-old Sarah has to face up to the truth of what really happened back in the summer of 1986.

August 1985: Sarah celebrates her fifteenth birthday in the back garden of the suburban seaside house she shares with her ageing father. As she embarks on her fifth and final year at Selton High School for Girls Sarah’s main focus is on her erratic friendships with Tina and Kate; her closest allies one moment, her fiercest opponents the next as they compete for the attention of the new boy, Dante. When her father is unexpectedly taken ill, Sarah is sent to stay with Kate’s family in nearby Amber Chalks. Kate’s youthful parents welcome her into the comfort of their liberal family home, where the girls can eat off trays and watch TV in Kate’s bedroom. They’ve never been closer — until a few days into her stay, events take a sinister turn, and Sarah knows that nothing will ever be the same again.

9 Lips Touch

by Laini Taylor

This is my choice for a book of short stories, another one off my Reading Challenge list. I love Laini Taylor’s writing and I can’t wait to see what this book is going to be like! It promises Goblins, and Demons and Vampires! EEK!!!

Three tales of supernatural love, each pivoting on a kiss that is no mere kiss, but an action with profound consequences for the kissers’ souls:

Goblin Fruit
In Victorian times, goblin men had only to offer young girls sumptuous fruits to tempt them to sell their souls. But what does it take to tempt today’s savvy girls?

Spicy Little Curses
A demon and the ambassador to Hell tussle over the soul of a beautiful English girl in India. Matters become complicated when she falls in love and decides to test her curse.

Hatchling
Six days before Esme’s fourteenth birthday, her left eye turns from brown to blue. She little suspects what the change heralds, but her small safe life begins to unravel at once. What does the beautiful, fanged man want with her, and how is her fate connected to a mysterious race of demons?

10 Magician

by Raymond Feist

I’m a bit apprehensive about this one! Mainly because it’s 832 pages long, it’s two books in one, and it’s massive! Literally if I hit you round the head with this book I would cause your serious harm! But I have chosen this one as my Author with the same initials, RF, because not only does it fit the criteria and I already own it, but because it was one highly recommended by my Dad (about 4 years ago), and he’s a bit disappointed that I haven’t read it yet. So yes, this is happening!

At Crydee, a frontier outpost in the tranquil Kingdom of the Isles, an orphan boy, Pug, is apprenticed to a master magician – and the destinies of two worlds are changed forever. Suddenly the peace of a Kingdom is destroyed as mysterious alien invaders swarm through the land. Pug is swept up into the conflict but for him and his warrior friend, Tomas, an odyssey into the unknown has only just begun. Tomas will inherit a legacy of savage power from an ancient civilisation. Pug’s destiny is to lead him through a rift in the fabric of space and time to the mastery of the unimaginable powers of a strange new magic…
