alannaarrows of the queen

1 If you like Tamora Pierce’s Tortall series, I’d recommend Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar series.

Tamora Pierce has a rash of strong female characters who are well rounded and find themselves on epic adventures but while all of her Tortall series (so far) have featured a female lead, Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar series has both, one trilogy within it even has a Griffin lead! Which is actually a little odd and perhaps not the trilogy to start with.

dark lover kiss of midnight

2 If you like J.R. Wards’ Black Dagger Brotherhood series I’d recommend Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series.

There’s a lot of similarities in these series, I forget which I found first, I’m sure it was the Midnight Breed series. They’re both about a form of vampire that’s trying to survive in a sub-society on earth and they both feature and aged leader and a damaged badboy. There are may differences too however and both take place in a fascinating world.

the queen of the tearling Winner's Curse

3 If you like Erika Johansen’s Tearling trilogy I’d recommend Marie Rutkoski’s Winners Curse trilogy.

I think I like Winners more than Tearling, You seem more in the story somehow – it’s hard to explain. But both stories are about a girl caught in a war and how much influence she has over said war. In Tearling it’s the queen, in Winners, it’s a general’s daughter, but both young women are strong and follow what is best, even if their heart wishes they wouldn’t.

firefly born of ice stitching snow cress

4 If you like the TV series Firefly, I’d recommend Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Born of Ice (The League #3), R.C Lewis’ Stitching Snow and Marissa Meyer’s Cress (Lunar Chronicles #3)

I read Born of Ice some time ago, but I remember thinking that the atmosphere on the ship reminded me very much of Firefly. I’d also recommend Stitching Snow and Cress because they have spacey elements too. I’m not sure if I always relate everything back to FIREFLY or if they are truly alike, but there’s spaceships and humour so what’s not to like? Yes there are 2 books threes here, but the rest of the series – despite being pretty good – aren’t like Firefly, but you should still go read them.

the fairy godmother one good knight fortunes fool

5 If you like Fairytale Retellings with a difference, I’d recommend Mercedes Lackey’s Five Hundred Kingdoms series.

I haven’t read all of this series yet – it’s on my to re-read list next year – and I think it’s still going, but from what I know they follow an interesting concept. What if you follow a sort of pattern and magic tries to force you into a spesific path? But what if your path isn’t quite right and it can’t get you to fit? Read The Fairy Godmother and find out! These are more for an older audience as they feature some sex scenes.

forgotten garden the girl you left behind

6 If you like to read Books by Kate Morton, I’d Recommend Books by Jojo Moyes.

I read The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton back in 2011. I love a historical romance and this was a brilliant one. I especially like the way Kate Morton blends two time periods together through a simple object and creates a connection. This technique is also used by Jojo Moyes in some of her historical books, such as The Girl You Left Behind or Ship of Brides. I actually find Jojo Moyes‘ writing to be softer/warmer and her characters easier to relate to so if I’m honest I prefer her books.

iron king shattered blue

7 If you like Julie Kagawa’s series The Iron Fey, I’d Recommend Shattered Blue

I, like so many others, fell in love with the Fey in the Iron Fey series. But when it finished (I know there’s a spin off series, but it’s not the same) I was left with this huge hole, and I’ve been chasing down Fae stories ever since. And I think I have finally found a new series that’s up to the same standard! Introducing Shattered Blue by Lauren Bird Horowitz! I really enjoyed this book! Hopefully you guys will too!

grimm2 queen of blood

8 If you like Fairy Tale Retellings, I’d Recommend Queen of Blood

I really enjoy fairytale retellings and I know there are plenty of them around at the moment, some are great, others not so great, but all the ones I’ve read recently are all main stream and talked about all the time… Sooo when I find one by accident and am surprised by how much I enjoyed it, well I have to tell everyone! Queen of Blood by Jill Myles is a mix of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, but with Vampire like undertones… sounds odd right, but it’s surprisingly good!

firefly girl from above star thief

9 If you like the TV series Firefly, I’d recommend Girl From Above and The Star Thief

In Firefly, I really liked the snarkiness of the characters and the comradery between them, and I think that both Girl from Above by Pippa DaCosta and The Star Thief by Jamie Grey both fulfil my need for this! And both are obviously set in space.

The Lie Tree  frozen charlotte

And just to be different…

10 If you don’t like really scary stories, I’d recommend Frozen Charlotte and The Lie Tree

I’m not the biggest fan of scary stories but both Frozen Charlotte by Alex Bell and The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge had just the right amount of atmospheric creepiness to give me goosebumps and be entertaining. I don’t like to be scared witless! Both of these also had a very classic feel to them.

Another great list! I’m definitely going to try The Winner’s Curse as I really enjoyed Queen of the Tearling. Also, Firefly <3 <3

Hehe, I adored the Queen of the Tearling too so I’m taking Paein’s advice and will be reading The Winner’s Curse as soon as possible :)

I’d definitely agree about Tortall/Valdemar – though I’ve not read as much of either as I should. So thrilled to see Firefly on both your lists – and the fact that it has given me an extra push to get ahold of Stitching Snow and given me two more books in The Girl From Above and The Star Thief to look into. (And agree about Cress, too.) Need to give The Fairy Godmother a go because it sounds like my kind of romance read. Definitely going to look into Queen of Blood because I’ve never heard of it – and I’m a sucker for any Beauty and the Beast retelling. (Or, in truth, even hints of it.) And, finally, I’m going to check out the last two books as well because horror is not my thing but II’m wanting some creepy/atmospheric Halloween books. Love this list, ladies.

Eek I’m so glad we’ve been able to introduce you to so many new books. I hope you enjoy them! There’s quite a few on Paein’s list that I need to read myself! Frozen Charlotte is definitely a good one for halloween! Especially if read late at night :)

Hello! Glad we could extend your list so much. You need to read more Tortall/Valdemar for sure. And I agree about Queen of Blood, I’ve added it to my list and I’ll read it next!

      Great list

Oow I hope you enjoy it. It’s supposed to be a children’s book but it still creeped me out!
