IT’S THE MONTH OF HALLOWEEN! Time to start the Halloween crafts!

Generally, Halloween is not as big in the UK as it is in the US – and why it’s so big there is anyone’s guess. It has been getting bigger in the UK in recent years however and if you’re a fan of all things spooky it’s the perfect excuse to go all out and fit right in.

Some purple spray paint, a black paint marker that will draw on glass, possibly two – one with a fine nib so that you can do the details and some scenes! (I used the ones found on the blog post linked in the picture above)

To start off with you need to spray paint the jars, I did this the day before I painted on the scenes to be sure it was dry – I’ve made jar type stuff before and it’s not been dry and I didn’t want that this time. I did a practice first, but it didn’t really help. The layer I put on each jar was the thinnest I was able, in my unskilled spray-painting trials and I could sort of see daylight through it, but I think that it was too dark a colour because I couldn’t see the scenes through it very well.

I improvised at this point, I cut out the scene and did a rough sketch around them. (I have to warn you, they were a lot larger than my jars and they did not print well at all, they were massive, you will possibly need to resize them before printing too.)

Once I’d done the rough sketch I removed the paper and improvised a little. Where the join ended up, I tried to blend the two sides together. I made sire the top of the tallest spire fit on the far so that not half the jar was black. It worked quite well. Two of the designs worked ok on the jars I used, the one with the spire and the one with the castle (Once I cut off the cat and the moon as it didn’t fit), the others however didn’t fit. The witch was too big and too high up  by comparison and the tree printed so big that it didn’t fully come out so I used the cat on the moon from the castle one and the witch as the decoration.

Once that was done it was a case of waiting for the sun to set so that I could take a nice lit picture.

CONCLUSION

I’m actually pretty pleased with these, and once I’d lit candles inside them I could see where I needed to go over with the black again. I may go over them fully again at another time once they’re completely dry just to make them opaque. The worst bit was the cutting out as it took such a long time. I’d recommend possibly a paler purple and a larger jar.
