Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s Top Ten Quotes I Loved From Books I Read In The Past Year Or So

1 ‘She took a deep breath, “Last chance. Are you in need of rescuing?” His expression turned very strange, almost as if she’d struck him, “Yes.” he said finally.  The Coldest girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

I NEEDED a quote from this one. And in hunting through them I remembered why I love this book so much. I chose this one because it doesn’t seem like much, but it’s actually one of the major plot points in the story, not that you know it till much later. I almost put the quote that refers back to this in too, but I was a little paranoid that you’d work out THE ENTIRE PLOT from those tiny words so I didn’t. I want to tell you exactly why I chose the quote that starts it all, but, spoilers sweetie. Read the book!

2 “A Man who wishes for power is the most likely to misuse it.” The Storyspinner by Becky Wallace

There’s a quote similar to this in Harry Potter. They’re both basically saying that those who seek the power aren’t always the best ones to have the power. In wishing for power, you’re clearly intending to use it for something. I don’t know, but this kind of quote always makes me think.

3 “What people remember about us? That matters. What are we, really, but acts of courage or cowardice, generosity or greed?” Knight’s shadow by Sebastien De castell

I needed a quote from this one (or it’s sibling) too, but the quote that started all that was way too long and many of the others made no sense out of context. So there’s this one. It doesn’t matter what we have but what we do.

4″Humans and orcs and rakasha sprawled together, racism forgotten in death.” The Sleeping King by Cindy Dees and Bill Flippin

I found this one quite profound. It’s also a TRUE representation of racism, because they’re all different races, not the characteristicism we call racism. It also showed how horrifically pointless the war that was going on was. Once they were dead it didn’t matter

5 “Captain?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you think it was destiny that brought us together?”
He squinted and, after a thoughtful moment, shook his head. “No. I’m pretty sure it was Cinder.” Cress Marissa Meyer

I’m reading Winter RIGHT NOW! and I wanted to quote something from this series. At this point I have to admit Thorne has grown on me quite a bit more than I think he did the first time I read 1-3 of this series. In fact I’m rather liking him now and I’m thinking he’s only going to get better. Not only is he often completely oblivious and blunt, he’s beginning to be away of who he is and who he could be. I think partly it’s because of Cress, both his growth as a character and the growth of my liking for him. Her assessment of him was way off, except that it wasn’t and now it isn’t and I like that. Also, Marissa Meyer writes some hilarious lines.

‘Out of the question,’ I said, ‘We’ll find our clues with good old-fashioned, normal detective work.’
‘Ugh’ Jackaby tossed back his head, ‘That sounds awful.’

There were so many laugh out loud moments in Jackaby and Beastly Bones by William Ritter. This one was from Beastly Bones. I don’t know if its particularly funny to anyone else but to me, every-time I re-read this quote, I smile. Jackaby was like the perfect blend of Dr Who and Sherlock Holmes and his in-ability to do anything the ‘normal’ way was so infuriating to all the other characters. I loved every-time Abigail Rook tried to put him in his place.

7
‘There were two sides to everything and everyone, and somewhere in the middle was the truth.’

Oh how profound! I loved this quote from Faking Perfect by Rebecca Phillips. People always talk about there being two sides to every story but never that the truth is probably a mix of both. Somewhere in the middle… I like that.

‘Out of habit, she ran a hand over the row of books, taking comfort in their solidity.’

I love Erika Johansen’s The Invasion of the Tearling. I’m totally in love with series! I know many people aren’t.
This ones basically because I do this very thing. If I’ve had a bad day or feel emotional or sad I like to go and sit near one of my many bookshelves and run my hands over them. Not sure why it makes me feel better. Maybe its because I know they promise that there is always another story waiting to begin.

9
…dreams can’t be contained for long. Their natural trajectory is forward. Out. Up. Away. Past all barriers and borders. Into the world. This is true of nightmares, too.’

This quote is from Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray. I think this one really strikes home this week. Real life really can become our worst nightmares. We can only hope for better dreams to come.

10
“… Humans make art to remember and be remembered,” said Caius. “Art is their weapon against forgetting.”

In A Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey, Caius and Echo discuss art and why it’s important. I loved this quote because it symbolises humanity. We never want to forget or be forgotten. We want to document even the worst parts of humanity so we remember. So we can learn from our worst moments, and find hope within the beautiful ones.
