Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison–even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

This is a re-read, the original review was part of a series review due to quick reading and can be found HERE.

Scarlet is not Cinder. They have different motives and Cinder keeps quiet where Scarlet shares. So many times you read sequels with identical leads and it gets so repetitive. Not so here; each character has a different set of characteristics and in some cases morals too.

I still found myself caring less about Scarlet – despite this being a re-read – but perhaps this is because I’d already spent a whole book with Cinder and Kai and they are just more dear to me. I also found Scarlet less…silly than I remember. She was sensible and reasonable , even if she didn’t stop to think sometimes – perhaps she knew she wouldn’t like the answer so she refused to even think about it because she couldn’t face it.

I brought it up last time, but I need to bring it up again. What’s with writers making curly haired characters comb or brush their hair to neaten it?! Have you ever seen curly hair brushed? This is something like what we’re dealing with right here:

curls brushedbrushed curls

Tidy, huh? This is what Scarlet’s hair would have looked like after she ‘tidied’ it. Only red….

I hope she and Wolf get to go back to the farm in the end. It sounded like a lovely place to retire to after having multiple adventures – her grandma clearly thought so. Plus. tomatoes!
Speaking of Wolf…I do like wolfy men!! Honourable emperors are pretty good too. Not so partial to arrogant ship thieves however…I can’t remember if Thorne grew on me like scarlet did or not. I guess I’ll find out
