pamstopten

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that other bloggers are welcome to join in, to create Top Ten lists on varying topics. This week it’s Top Ten Historical Type Books We’d Like to Read/ Re-Read in the Future!

Paein

I’ve chosen historical fantasy worlds. My favourite! Swords and horses and adventures. Mostly.

Winners Curse Series

by Marie Rutkoski

I’m slightly crazy about these books. I’m not even sure why, except the main characters are strong and slightly stupid and it’s adorable and heart breaking and there’s so much else going on other than them! Right now I own three copies of each of the first two books – kindle, paperback and hardback. I’ll be getting three of the third one too. I don’t care what you think about that. haha! Book three is out soon and as soon as it turns up everything else will be dropped and the series will be read from start to finish. Why don’t I pre-read the first two? Well, then I’ll have to ‘clock watch’ for the pub date of 3 and where’s the fun in that?!

Valdemar series

by Mercedes Lackey

Any kind of historical world list needs to include Valdemar, mainly because it’s so vast! I have a whole bunch of books set in this world I’ve yet to read, the first books were being written before I was born and they’re still going! Within their books there are also various cultures that are fascinating too. Of course, I’ll have to re-read them all – in order of setting – to get the new ones in the right place!

3 Greatcoats series

by Sebastien de Castell

I found this series through Netgalley and so far I’ve loved it. It’s not flowers and sunshine, it’s actually quite bleak, dead kings and sword battles and death but y’know what? That’s part of the charm. Falcio’s carrying the whole country with him and he has no idea. There’s also a whole bunch of one liners in there and they’re so my weakness! The third is out this year and I’m looking forward to the prospect of reading the first two again.

4 Fire and Thorns series

by Rae Carson

I’ve read the first book before and I want to finish the series this year. Not only is this set in a society completely different from my own, it’s also set in a fascinating historical world and I can’t wait to read more. It’s unlike many of the others I’ve read, it has less of a ‘western’ forests and mud feel and more of an ‘eastern’ desert and silks feel.

5 Jackaby

by William Ritter

I bought this quite recently, but Ms4Tune says I need to have it on this list so here it is! One to read – hopefully some time this year. This is the odd one out on my list! Also, the only stand alone and the only non re-read.

6 The Dark Days Club

by Allison Goodman

Very excited to read this book soon. The Dark Days’ Club is set in 1812 and promises adventure and supernatural danger in amongst billowing corset dresses and proper English Etiquette. Sounds like a fun blast from the past.

7 Uninvited

by Cat Winters

I just got this one out of the library so I can read it soon. Sounds like a more impressive version of Sixth Sense with a brilliant historical backdrop. I love the creep but gorgeous cover too.

8 Grave Mercy

by Robin LaFever

I read assassins and monasteries in the descriptions and saw this cover and can only presume its set in a sort of fantasy past. Either way I still haven’t read this series and I am going to rectify this asap.

9 I Capture the Castle

by Dodie Smith

It’s been a long time since I read this but I really loved this book when I was younger. I loved the 1940′s setting and the thought of growing up in a Castle! A CASTLE! I loved this coming of age story and I definitely want to read it again.

10 Vessel

by Sarah Beth Durst

This doesn’t really have a time period but I like to think that it was set in the past. When there were people living in the dessert who believed in Sand monsters and many gods. This was a beautiful story that reminded me of The Arabian Nights. I really want to read more of Sarah Beth Durst’s books.
