One summer can change everything…

Haunted with guilt after his girlfriend’s death, Daniel Hudson has no interest in committing to anyone. At the end of the summer, he’ll be leaving Florida for a new start in college. If only he could avoid the mysterious new girl in town, who seems every bit as naive and eccentric as she looks. Trouble is, she’s hard to ignore, with her beautiful piercing eyes, pitiful-looking dog, and unsettling tendency of finding trouble.

Clover Scott lived her whole life off the grid and arrives on the Gulf coast in search of her grandparents. She never expected to nearly drown, or get caught in a hurricane, or fall in love with the boy who rescues her. Now, she has a chance to rewrite her life’s story, to finally fit in somewhere, but Daniel wants answers about her past. When the police start asking questions about the disappearance of her parents, she must make a choice: go to jail or confess her secrets—even if they might destroy her chance at a happily-ever-after.

This was so unbelievably cute. From the very first page I knew I was going to fall in love with these characters, and I did! I sobbed and laughed and felt every emotion they felt, on their path to forgiveness and happiness. I feel so emotionally drained right now that I’m not entirely sure how to do this book justice. How am I supposed to pull together a review from my tangled thoughts and fuzzy feelings???

The Secret To letting Go, is a story about two people who save each other. Clover is a young girl who has lost everything. She has experienced some truly terrible things in her life so far, and yet, she knows very little about the world. She arrives in a small town in Florida, all alone, with very few belongings and very little money. But her kind nature shines through regardless. Daniel first sees Clover when she walks into his fathers golf store. He is instantly drawn to her quirky yet striking appearance and soon finds a reason to talk to her. While Daniel may have to save Clover, literally… and on more than one occasion, it is obvious that she is not the only one who is in need of salvation.

I loved the warm fuzzy feeling I got whilst reading this book. I loved that it was written in alternating points of view so I could get to know both Clover and Daniel, and I loved that they were clearly different. Daniel always came across as wary, his feelings were always guarded and confused whilst Clover was more direct. She spoke her mind, as though she had no sensor, but when you were looking through her eyes you realised that there was a lot more going on in her head. She was frightened, worried and guilt-ridden. and the reason she asks so many questions is because she has a need to understand. She was a truly wonderful character to read. I completely understood how Daniel was so fascinated with her, because I was too.

I enjoyed the writing style of this book. It was uncomplicated and direct. The whole story flowed really well. I was a bit surprised to find the revelation to Clover’s past at about 70%, in many YA books this would have been it. The secrets are out there now, job done, but I thought it was great that we got to see how these revelations helped change the characters and the dynamics between them. It was wonderful to see a YA contemporary romance that didn’t have a straight forward ‘happily ever after, The End’, approach. It definitely felt more realistic because of it.

I would recommend this to lovers of Katie McGarry’s Pushing the Limits as it has that same depth of character and swoon worthy romance.

I don’t usually do this but whilst reading this I was listening to Rachel Platten’s album, Wildfire, and I thought Better Place perfectly summed up Clover and Daniel’s relationship. I just wanted to share that :)
