I’m so surprised and excited by this sequel. I’m not gonna lie, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Nowhere But Here, and I wasn’t sure I would continue reading this series. It didn’t seem like anything special to me. I found Emily really irritating and the story unnecessarily dramatic. But I’m so glad I did! Walk the Edge… it changes EVERYTHING!

We’re introduced to a new character Breanna. Like Emily she doesn’t know a lot about The Reign of Terror (the local motorcycle club), only the rumours and the warnings passed around town. Breanna is the really smart, quiet girl, the one everyone knows but doesn’t see. She’s the middle child of nine, so is used to being overlooked. But that’s all about to change. After Breanna is forgotten by her family and left at school alone, she meets the most notorious member of Terror, Razor. Scared but wishing to break out of her monotonous and depressing life, she strikes a deal, his protection for $20. Razor is intrigued by Breanna. He knows his reputation proceeds him but somehow this quiet girl surprises him. Razor isn’t the only one who’s noticed Breanna, but unlike Razor, Kyle wants something from Breanna, something she doesn’t want to give. Soon Breanna, finds herself being blackmailed by Kyle and the only person she can turn to is Razor.

There are certain things I’ve come to expect from a Katie McGarry book, these include encountering a teen with troubles, (complex and well engrained troubles of course, but angsty troubles non the less), some form of isolation factor, and a full blown whirl wind romance. And this book has all of these in bucket loads!

I loved Breanna! She’s probably the best Katie McGarry character I’ve read so far! I completely understood her because, like her, I was always scared of what other people would say, think, do. So scared, that for most of my early life I allowed stupid people to walk all over me. I’m still a people-pleaser but now I consider things more and can now say no… sometimes I love it when I can completely connect with a character and Breanna is definitely one of those characters.

Razor was the PERFECT bad-boy with a hidden soft side. He had childhood traumas and emotional instabilities that were believable, he had the body and the face of a god and the attitude of a firecracker! I loved him instantly. Some may say he was a walking cliche but I don’t care, it’s a cliche cos it works!

The most exciting part for me though, was Katie McGarry’s portrayal of family. I found Breanna’s family fascinating. The perfect family from the outside but inside, it was fractured and broken. I liked the constant vying for attention, Breanna’s constant feels of isolation whilst surrounded by family, and the way the parents struggled to keep on top of work and home life. It was like a more realistic version of cheaper by the dozen! (Breanna is FedEx in case you were wondering). I liked how this contrasted with the Reign of Terror, who appeared dysfunctional to outsiders but, as Breanna found, had more heart than most families could ever have.

Overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable book, full of action, angst and a well built romance. No insta-love here people! I think Walk the Edge could be read by itself if preferred. This series has definitely improved and I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Next up Chevy and Violet!
