She does not know what awaits her at the enemy’s gate.

Elisa is a hero.

She led her people to victory over a terrifying, sorcerous army. Her place as the country’s ruler should be secure. But it isn’t.

Her enemies come at her like ghosts in a dream, from foreign realms and even from within her own court. And her destiny as the chosen one has not yet been fulfilled.

To conquer the power she bears, once and for all, Elisa must follow a trial of long-forgotten—and forbidden—clues, from the deep, hidden catacombs of her own city to the treacherous seas. With her go a one-eyed spy, a traitor, and the man whom—despite everything—she is falling in love with.

If she’s lucky, she will return from this journey. But there will be a cost.

My review of book one can be found HERE and my first impressions of this book can be found HERE.

Well, I was right about this book. It’s just my type! And right now we’ve got one hacked off Bearer-Queen whose not playing by anyone else’s rules any more. This book is chock full of everything good and fantastic and I’m really not sure I’ve ever read a better sequel. Often I find second books so bland and wishy washy. This one was swimming in assassination attempts, old friends, new loves, epic journeys and civil war.

Again Elisa has grown so much throughout the book, she’s far more more at the end of the book than she was at the start. She’s a queen now, instead of a princess playing at ruling and she’s about to reek havoc. She’s growing into herself and she’s learnt the only thing she truly needs is herself. And, just maybe Hector.

I loved following Elisa through each step of her self discovery and I cant wait to see her to the end. As in an HEA….not The End….no The Ends please! Please? I’m also looking forward to finding out about the Parliament of Queens as well. I wonder what that’s going to be?!

Unlike the first book, with it’s slow story build to establish what was going on, there was never a dull moment in this book. It keeps going right where the last one left off, give or take, which I liked. There was also little to no repetition in here either, unlike many series that throws in a rehash of what’s happened before, either so that new readers don’t have to go back or to save a re-read for return readers. This made it feel like were were diving right in instead of just testing the waters and I hope that the next book continues in the same way, because I really want her to show them what for!

I need to go an re-read the ending now, before reading the next one!
