practical magic the prince of persia sucker punch the crow the fifth element

1 Practical Magic

Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian’s vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov — and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.

I love this film. I was horrified when I read the book, it’s totally different!
I don’t know what it is about this film that I love, but I remember once watching it twice in a row snuggled under a duvet in the dark when I had a migraine. It just made me feel SO much better. I think that it’s possibly because it’s just quite a female film. I’m not sure it would pass The Bechdel Test considering the plot is about a murderous ex-lover and a romantic curse, but the women save themselves and are pretty fun people.

2 The Prince of Persia

In the holy city of Alamut resides the Sands of Time, which gives mortals the power to turn back time. After leading an attack on the city, Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal), the adopted son of Persia’s king, acquires a dagger that gives the one who holds it access to the Sands. Dastan goes on the run with an Alamut princess named Tamina (Gemma Arterton) after being accused of killing his father. The pair must protect the ancient treasure from dark forces and unmask the king’s assassin.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton. Do I really need to say more? I know nothing of the game and like the Resident Evil films (Which I also love) they are probably nothing like the games and possibly quite offensive to some game fans. I don’t care. It’s a well made time travel story with a love story on the side. I’m happy!

3 Sucker Punch

Locked away, a young woman named Babydoll (Emily Browning) retreats to a fantasy world where she is free to go wherever her mind takes her. Determined to fight for real freedom, she finds four women — Rocket, Blondie, Amber and Sweet Pea — to join together to escape the terrible fate that awaits them. With a virtual arsenal at their disposal, the allies battle everything from samurais to serpents, while trying to decide what price they will pay for survival.

-Google

Well this is a confusing jumble with many theories. But if you pay attention to the intro and the outro, it makes you wonder who the film was really about. And oddly, I like that. This one does pass The Bechdel Test! And the tiny outfits and dramatic eyes are quite reminiscent of anime if totally weirdly placed.

4 The Crow (All The Crows!)

The night before his wedding, musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered by members of a violent inner-city gang. On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and assumes the gothic mantle of the Crow, a supernatural avenger. Tracking down the thugs responsible for the crimes and mercilessly murdering them, Eric eventually confronts head gangster Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) to complete his macabre mission.

Oh boy. I’ve watched some of these on repeat too. I borrowed number 3 on VIDEO CASSETTE from the library, realised it was number 3 and put the other two on order, but it took forever and I just watched number 3 first. This probably should have been my first clue that I liked bittersweet stories. Not quite tragedies, but stories with sadness and a sort of happy end.
I’ve had to persuade several people that the 18 age rating was NOT because they were horror films and I’ve even had to persuade people that 2-4 were not remakes, but actually a continuation of the legend. I can’t decide which is my favourite of 3 and 4, but they’re all pretty good.
This is based off of a graphic novel that was written when the creator was in a bad place after his fiance was killed. A graphic novel that I have no idea why I don’t own yet!

5 The Fifth Element

In the 23rd century, a New York City cabbie, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), finds the fate of the world in his hands when Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) falls into his cab. As the embodiment of the fifth element, Leeloo needs to combine with the other four to keep the approaching Great Evil from destroying the world. Together with Father Vito Cornelius (Ian Holm) and zany broadcaster Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker), Dallas must race against time and the wicked industrialist Zorg (Gary Oldman) to save humanity.

Does this film even make sense? I can’t say that it really does, but it’s fantastic anyway! I must have seen it 5 times before I realised Garry Oldman was in the film. And that was by reading the credits! Of course I had to re-watch it again afterwards so that I was able to SEE him! Fantastic actor.

Moulin Rouge elf Robin Hood Last Holiday Beauty and the Beast

6 Moulin Rouge

Ewan McGregor stars as Christian, who leaves behind his bourgeois father during the French belle époque of the late 1890s to seek his fortunes in the bohemian underworld of Montmartre, Paris. Christian meets the absinthe- and alcohol-addicted artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), who introduces him to a world of sex, drugs, music, theater, and the scandalous dance known as the cancan, all at the Moulin Rouge, a decadent dance hall, brothel, and theater that’s the brainchild of Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent). Christian also meets and falls into a tragically doomed romance with the courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman), who becomes the star of the play he’s writing, which parallels the couple’s romance and utilizes rock music from a century later, including songs by Nirvana, Madonna, the Beatles, and Queen, among others. Loosely based on the opera Orpheus in the Underworld, Moulin Rouge was shown in competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival

Karl Williams – Rotten Tomatoes

Easily my favourite movie of all time. It has absolutely everything I could want all in one film. It’s completely mental and probably isn’t for everybody but I just love the romance, the songs and how the filming completely makes it. It’s wonderful and when Ewan McGregor cries, I cry everytime… EVERYTIME!

7 Elf

After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in search of his true identity.

IMDb

It’s almost that time of the year again when its perfectly acceptable to pull out the Christmas movies… and Elf is one of my favourites. It’s wonderfully humorous and perfect for all ages. Which is your favourite Christmas movie?

8 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Nobleman crusader Robin of Locksley (Kevin Costner) breaks out of a Jerusalem prison with the help of Moorish fellow prisoner Azeem (Morgan Freeman) and travels back home to England. But upon arrival he discovers his dead father in the ruins of his family estate, killed by the vicious sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). Robin and Azeem join forces with outlaws Little John (Nick Brimble) and Will Scarlett (Christian Slater) to save the kingdom from the sheriff’s villainy.

 Google

This is one of those movies I loved to watch with my Dad. I love this film. I love the cast (Alan Rickman makes an amazing baddy) and I love the whole Robin Hood story-line. It’s a classic and I love this adaptation.

9 The Last Holiday

Upon learning of a terminal illness, a shy woman (Queen Latifah) decides to sell off all her possessions and live it up at a posh European hotel.

IMDb

I found this film one day when laid up full of cold. I was flicking through the channels and this film seemed silly enough not to require to much attention but I quickly found myself completely absorbed in the story. It’s funny, it’s clever and the cast are really entertaining. It’s one of those lazy Sunday afternoon films which will make you laugh.

10 Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

An arrogant young prince (Robby Benson) and his castle’s servants fall under the spell of a wicked enchantress, who turns him into the hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. The spirited, headstrong village girl Belle (Paige O’Hara) enters the Beast’s castle after he imprisons her father Maurice (Rex Everhart). With the help of his enchanted servants, including the matronly Mrs. Potts (Angela Lansbury), Belle begins to draw the cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation.

Google

I can not wait for the new Emma Watson version but as amazing as I hope it will be I don’t think it could ever be as awesome as the animated Disney version. I love all the songs, the voices, and basically everything in this movie, especially the library and the twirly camera ballroom scene :) What’s your favourite Disney film? And are you excited to see the new version?

You got to watch Fifth Element in school? That’s so cool, all we seemed to get to watch was Shakespeare and an inspector calls… yawn!

I literally thought I was the only one who saw this movie lol. Everyone I’ve told about it has never heard of it. It’s great though isn’t it :)

Is it still too early to watch Elf? Ever since I wrote this list I’ve wanted to watch it… and Frozen… but perhaps mid-November is still too early?

I know right! Emma Watson looks so beautiful in all the photos and trailers. I love how they’ve been dropping little hints all year and now the trailers here and I’m so excited!

Moulin Rouge breaks my heart everytime but I need to watch it every year… it’s just too good! x

Me too! Yes she does look gorgeous doesn’t she? She really is the perfect Belle. I know, same here, but it’s so good!

Sucker Punch is one of those strange movies for me that I adored at some parts and hated at other parts. That said, watching it was definitely a very unique and interesting experience. Practical Magic is one of the bestest movies out there. I watch it every time it’s on TV. I really want to watch The Crow – I heard pretty good things about it and it sounds exactly like my kind of story.

Beauty and the Beast will forever and always be one of my favorite movies – it’s so gorgeous and magical and aww I just love it since the first time I watched it. I’M SO EXCITED FOR THE NEW VERSION OMG. I’ll say this – live action Cinderella was pretty silly and boring, but I have HUGE hopes for this one, especially after that killer trailer.
    Great lists, ladies! :)
