It’s time for Musing Mondays, a meme from Books and a Beat!

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme that asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer and then supplies a random question:

Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

I fall to my knees. Shattered glass, melted candles and the outline of scorched feathers are all that surround me. Every single person who was in my house – my entire family — is gone.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange markings on his skin.

The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland…

This cover is just gorgeous! I love the feel of this book so far. It’s set in Brooklyn and it’s about a family who practice old magic but the main character is afraid of her magic, she doesn’t want to be a Bruja so she casts a spell to get rid of her magic. But it’s not her magic that gets disposed off, it’s her family! I’m loving all the magical details and the history that comes with it. I find the main character Alex really irritating but I’m hoping she will grow on me.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Name your best-loved character from a fiction book.

Obviously my best-loved characters of all time would be anyone from Harry Potter but I keep mentioning Harry Potter for these links so I’m going to choose something else.

Finding Sky Stealing Pheonix Seeking Crystal

So I’m choosing The Benedict Series by Joss Stirling. I really loved the original trilogy and I really want to read the newer trilogy. Finding Sky was my favourite book but my favourite characters were Phoenix and Yves. I loved that Yves instantly knew Phoenix was his soulmate and spent the whole book telling her why they are meant to be. He never doubted, never gave up, never stopped telling her he loved her and Phoenix’s reaction was priceless. She thought he was a complete nut job! (Standard!) But he won her over in the end.
